Steve Spurrier Takes Shot at Georgia's Schedule

Famous college football head coach Steve Spurrier takes a shot at Georgia's out-of-conference schedule for the 2023 season.

While there aren't many negative things to be said about the reigning back-to-back national champs as Georgia heads into this season fighting for a third, the upcoming schedule for the Bulldogs is certainly one of them. Head coach Kirby Smart and his team won't exactly have to run the gauntlet this year during the regular season, and people have quickly taken notice of it.

Former Florida and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has never been fond of the Georgia Bulldogs and has been prone to take a shot at his former rival any chance he gets. And that's exactly what he did when asked about the upcoming SEC schedules and how Georgia's compare to some of the other teams within their division on "Open Mike" with Mike Bianchi.

"Right now, in the SEC, only two teams are playing two Power Five teams," Spurrier said. "We're playing Utah and FSU, and South Carolina is playing North Carolina and Clemson. And all the others are just one, some of them maybe none." The old head ball coach would then double down on his statement by saying, "I think Georgia opens up with UT-Martin, and we're going out to Utah, the team that just won the Pac-12. You know, there's a difference in scheduling to what your record's going to be."

While Spurrier is right to say that Georgia has one of the weaker schedules in the conference this year, it is important to note that the Bulldogs were supposed to play and out of conference game against Oklahoma on the road this season. The game, however, was canceled by the SEC due to the Sooners being on the verge of entering the conference in 2024.

It wouldn't be college football season without coach Spurrier speaking his mind and attempting to stick it to the Bulldogs at least once. Regardless, Georgia's favorable schedule is one of many reasons why they remain the favorites to win this year's title game and why many expect them to run the table during the regular season.
