The XFL Player draft is set to take place October 15-16th, today they announced the third group of players that will be available for the inaugural XFL Draft.

Among the third group of players announced was a familiar face to Bulldog nation, former Georgia defensive lineman, Trenton Thompson.

Thompson left early for the NFL draft after spending three seasons in Athens. Amounting to 127 tackles, 15.5 for loss, and 5.5 sacks. And after going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Player draft, was picked up by the Cleveland Browns only to be released shortly thereafter. Thompson is currently rostered on the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL.

Thompson has all the talent in the world, the nation's #1 player in the 2015 high school class. It's certainly great to see him get the opportunity to play seemingly competitive football with hopes of eventually getting another crack at the NFL.

The XFL is set to begin play in February of next year shortly after the conclusion of the NFL. A savvy business move by Vince McMahon and Oliver Luck, but also an opportunity for players like Thompson to end up rolling their successes of the XFL into a shot back into the league next fall.

The XFL's salaries are separated into four "tiers" the players:

  • Tier 1: A minimum of $250,000 salary will be exclusively assigned to one player. This tier will likely be used for the quarterback, with a max salary of $600,000
  • Tier 2: Three players with a pay range of $150,000 to $175,000.
  • Tier 3: 23 Players with salaries ranging from $70,000 to $100,000
  • Tier 4: 18 Players with salaries ranging from $50,000 to $70,000

With more rounds of the XFL player pool being announced up until the 12th, we will let you know if any other former Dawgs are selected.

It's no wonder Thompson was the nation's #1 player in 2015, if he can return to 1/10th of the level of dominance he will be playing again on Sunday's soon.
