Kentucky PG Sahvir Wheeler enters transfer portal; should Gonzaga go after him?

Mark Few will need to add depth at the guard position

The offseason has officially started for Gonzaga men's basketball, and there are many questions to answer.

One of the biggest question marks for Mark Few and the Bulldogs is the guard position. Rasir Bolton is gone, and Julian Strawther and Malachi Smith likely are too.

That leaves Nolan Hickman and Hunter Sallis as the only returning guards with any experience. Dom Harris could emerge, but Few buried him deep on the bench this season.

Few has been active in the NCAA transfer portal the past several seasons, and an intriguing guard just hit the portal on Monday: Kentucky's Sahvir Wheeler. ESPN's Jeff Borzello first reported the news of Wheeler's departure from Kentucky. He is entering the portal as a graduate transfer.

A 5-foot-10 point guard, Wheeler started his college career at Georgia before transferring to Kentucky in 2021. He averaged 10.1 points and 6.9 assists in 2021-22 for the Wildcats, and 7.7 points and 5.6 assists this season.

Wheeler's best season came as a sophomore at Georgia in 2020-21 when he averaged 14.0 points, 7.4 assists and 1.7 steals.

He is a true point guard and could be a good fit alongside Hickman and Sallis. Few got to see Wheeler in Spokane earlier this season when the Bulldogs hosted Kentucky at the Spokane Arena. Wheeler had 7 points and 4 assists in just 17 minutes.

Wheeler's best game with Kentucky was a 98-69 win over North Carolina in Dec. 2021 in Las Vegas. Wheeler had 26 points, 8 assists and 4 steals. Here are highlights from that performance:

Wheeler was a four-star recruit out of Houston Christian in 2019. He had offers from Georgia, Iowa State and Texas A&M.

Do you think Few should go after Wheeler?
