Tennessee State's recent hire of Tyler Roehl as associate head coach and offensive coordinator was a strategic move by head coach Eddie George. The goal for Roehl in Nashville is to unlock the potential of the Tigers' offense.

Roehl ended an 11-year stint at North Dakota State to join the Tigers football program in Nashville.

The Bison have been a perennial FCS playoff team since 2011. Last season, they lost 31-29 in overtime to Montana in the FCS Semifinals. Under Roehl as offensive coordinator, NDS led the FCS in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and offensive touchdowns.

"My family and I couldn't be more excited to join TSU because of the people, the vision, and the opportunity to positively impact the community and team," Roehl said in the TSU announcement. "We are going to Nashville on a mission to do things at a championship level daily."

During his five seasons as the offensive playcaller for the Bison, Roehl played a crucial role in the team's success, reaching the NCAA FCS National Championship three times and securing titles in 2019 and 2021. In total, Roehl boasts seven FCS titles and eight Missouri Valley Football Conference titles with the Bison.

Roehl's offensive strategies with the Bison propelled them to the FCS rankings in "completion percentage, passing efficiency, red-zone scoring, scoring offense, and third-down conversion percentage."

North Dakota State has three straight seasons as the nation's leader in rushing touchdowns and four out of five seasons as the offensive coordinator with consistent rankings of first or second in rushing yards.

Ironically, Tennessee State unveiled their 2024 football schedule, which includes a game against North Dakota State in Fargo on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Tigers ended the 2023 season with a 6-5 record. They opened the season at 6-2 before losing three straight against Charleston Southern, Eastern Illinois, and Tennessee Tech by double-digits.
