Five Houston Players Fans Need to Know Before Week 1

Houston is entering the 2026 season as the No. 24 ranked team in college football.
On Sept. 5, the Cougars open their season against Oregon State with their talented roster. However, there are some players that fans should keep an eye on.
Here are five Houston players fans should watch out for that can answer those questions.
Makhi Hughes, Running Back
Makhi Hughes is one of the most important additions to the offense, replacing former running back Dean Connors. He ran for 1,401 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024 when he was with Tulane.
Additionally, the running back reunites with head coach Willie Fritz, a coach who has knowledge of how Hughes runs. If Hughes looks like his 2024 self, Houston's running game will be one of the best in the Big 12.
Trent Walker, Wide Receiver
Trent Walker is another addition to the offense who could have a huge impact. Wide receiver Amare Thomas has established himself as a threat to opposing defenses, making them focus on him more. That's where Walker comes in.
During his time at Oregon State in 2025, Walker had 823 yards and two touchdowns. As more and more focus goes to Thomas, Walker becomes a threat who can sneak through the defense and produce big plays.
The No. 1 option is Thomas without a doubt; however, Walker can take the pressure off Thomas, which could lead to more one-on-ones for both receivers.
Shadre Hurst, Offensive Lineman
Shadre Hurst is one of the most important pieces on the offensive line. He is a two-time All-AAC First Team selection, was graded as the No. 6 guard nationally by PFF in 2025 and is a three-time American Athletic Conference Champion.
He was also named to the Preseason Third Team All-Big 12 by Pro Football Network. When it comes to run blocking or pass blocking, he becomes one of the best offensive linemen in the conference.
Winning battles in the trenches and giving his quarterback time to make calculated plays is what Hurst does best. Alongside players such as Anthony Boswell and Drew Terrill, who were also on the Preseason Third Team All-Big 12, this front could be the best in the conference.
Javion White, Defensive Back
Javion White is another anchor in the secondary with elite-level production. In 2025, he recorded 50 tackles, six pass deflections and three interceptions at Tulane.
Additionally, he received All-AAC honors and proved to be a valuable defensive back at Tulane. If his production and elite-level coverage carry over with him to Houston, the Cougars might have one of the best secondaries in the conference.
Patrick Overmyer, Tight End
Patrick Overmyer will be one of the most interesting players to watch in this upcoming season. Last year, former Houston tight end Tanner Koziol was one of quarterback Conner Weigman's favorite targets, with 727 yards and six touchdowns.
The question now is how Overmyer can fill the void Koziol left. Throughout his two years of production, Overmyer has a combined 627 yards and eight touchdowns. Weigman could make Overmyer a favorite target once the season gets going.
