Three-star 2021 Florida LB Trevor Moffitt Commits To Illini

Trevor Moffitt is the 23rd high school prospect from the state of Florida in the last three years giving a verbal commitment to Illinois.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Trevor Moffitt has become the third verbal commitment of the 2021 class for Illinois football.

Moffitt, a three-star linebacker from Bushnell, Florida is expected to be an interesting prospect for Lovie Smith’s defense because most recruiting services consider him a hybrid player. Due to the high adoption of spread offenses, Moffitt’s speed could be more than welcomed in Smith’s linebacker unit or the Illini could also use him as a safety at the college level in a nickel package to easily make him a three-down player.

Due to the recent coronavirus epidemic, Moffitt is one of several prospects being forced to make verbal pledges to college programs without physically seeing the campus. However, the Illinois staff has been very active with what they’re calling “virtual official visits” with prospects on Zoom video conferencing.

Moffitt is the 23rd high school prospect from the state of Florida who has given a verbal commitment to Lovie Smith’s Illini program in the last three recruiting classes.

Moffitt reportedly also held scholarship offers from Group of Five college football programs such as Temple, Florida Atlantic, Connecticut, Colorado State, Army, Navy and Appalachian State. Moffitt’s father, Ben, was a three-year starter at linebacker for South Florida and was an All-Big East Conference selection in 2007.

As of last season, Moffitt was a three-sport athlete at South Sumter High School, who qualified for the state track and field championship in the long jump as a sophomore. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound linebacker was All-Area Defensive Player of the Year selection following a 2019 season that produced 110 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and four forced fumbles that led South Sumter H.S. to 9-4 overall record and a berth in the Class 4A-Region 2 championship game. According to 247Sports.com, he is the 172nd-best player in the state of Florida and the 103rd-best outside linebacker prospect in the nation.

Moffitt was reportedly first offered by Illinois linebackers coach Miles Smith in early March and less than two months, the Illini have its third verbal commitment of the upcoming 2021 class. Moffitt joins three-star, Atlanta-area athlete Prince Green and three-star Texas quarterback Samari Collier as high school verbal pledges to Illinois.
