Michigan State, Wisconsin Win, Secure Big Ten's Win Over ACC in Annual Challenge

The Big Ten got huge wins from Michigan State and Wisconsin on the final night of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday, clinching the annual event for the third year in a row with an 8-6 victory in the three-day event.

The ACC won the night on Wednesday, but the Big Ten took the ACC/Big Ten Challenge once again after Michigan State and Wisconsin posted victories on the final evening of the three-day annual event. The Big Ten won the even, 8-6.

The Big Ten won the Challenge for the third year in a row, and are now 8-2-3 in the past 13 years. The ACC holds the overall edge at 12-8-3 edge dating back to 1999, having won the first 10 events. The ACC also leads 144-121 in all ACC/Big Ten Challenge games.

Here are the summaries for all 14 games. 

Wednesday, Dec. 1 results

  • NO. 22 MICHIGAN STATE 73, LOUISVILLE 64: Malik Hall scored 15 points off the bench to lead Michigan State (6-2) to a big win over Louisville. The Spartans hit 10-of-18 three-point attempts and won despite 19 turnovers. "If you told me we'd be 6-2 after the schedule we've played, I'd take it," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "But I'm not satisfied because of the turnovers."
  • NO. 23 WISCONSIN 70, GEORGIA TECH 66: Brad Davison scores 27 points and even got a hug from a fan after diving into the stands to save a ball, spilling a beer along the way. The Badgers (6-1) also got 15 points from Johnny Davis.
  • NORTH CAROLINA 72, NO. 24 MICHIGAN 51: No. 24 Michigan (4-3) continued to struggle in the early season with a blowout loss at North Carolina (4-2). The Wolverines shot just 35.1 percent from the field. Moussa Diabate led the Wolverines with 13 points. 
  • MIAMI 63, PENN STATE 58: John Harrar had 16 points and 12 rebounds for  Penn State (4-3), but the Nittany Lions made just 6-of-24 three-points in a loss to Miami. Seth Lundy added 14 for Penn State.
  • VIRGINIA TECH 62, MARYLAND 58: Virginia Tech's Justin Mutts scored a basket and a free throw in the final 20 seconds to beat Maryland (5-3). It was the first meeting between the schools since the Terrapins left the ACC in 2014. The Terrapins, who made just one of 13 three-pointers, were led by Qudus Wahab, who scored 18 points.  
  • N.C. STATE 104, NEBRASKA 100 (4-OT): Dereon Seabron scored an ACC/Big Ten Challenge record 39 points, including four in the final 44 seconds of he fourth overtime to lead N.C. State over Nebraska (5-3). It was the longest game in Challenge history. Alonzo Verge scored 25 points for the Cornhuskers and freshman Bryce McGowens added 24 points and nine rebounds.

Tuesday, Nov. 30 results

  • OHIO STATE 71, NO. 1 DUKE 66: Zed Key had 20 points and E.J. Liddell added 14 points and 14 rebounds as Ohio State (5-2) upset No. 1 Duke (7-1) in Columbus. Ohio State erased an 18-point deficit and held Duke scoreless for the final 4-plus minutes of the game to get the win. Ohio State made its final three field goal attempts and last four free throws. "I thought our ability to stay with it was really important," Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann said. "Players win games, and we had a number of guys make plays down the stretch."
  • NO. 2 PURDUE 93, FLORIDA STATE 65: Jaden Ivey had 18 points and four teammates scored in double figures as Purdue (7-0) crushed Florida State (5-2) for the first time in school history. Brandon Newman scored 13 points off the bench for the Boilermakers, Zach Edey and Isaiah Thompson had 12 and Sasha Stefanovic added 11. For the complete game story, CLICK HERE
  • SYRACUSE 112, INDIANA 110 (2-OT): Buddy Boeheim scored 27 points and his brother Jimmy Boeheim added 26 to beat Indiana in an epic double-overtime win over Indiana (6-1). Indiana erased an 18-point second-half deficit and tied the game in the final seconds, but the Orange (4-3) won in the second overtime on two free throws by Joe Girard with 0.8 seconds left.   • MINNESOTA 54, PITTSBURGH 53: Luke Loewe scored on a put-back with 2.4 seconds left to give Minnesota (6-0) a thrilling one-point win over Pittsburgh (2-5. Payton Willis scored on a lay-up with 30 seconds to go to get the Gophers within one. In the final seconds, E.J. Stephens missed a jumper for Minnesota, but Loewe grabbed the rebound and scored.
  • RUTGERS 74, CLEMSON 64: Ron Harper Jr. scored 23 points and Caleb McConnell added 16 to lead Rutgers (4-3) past Clemson (5-3).
  • WAKE FOREST 77, NORTHWESTERN 73 (OT): — Jake LaRavia made the go-ahead jump shot with five seconds left in overtime for Wake Forest then came up with a steal on the ensuing possession to secure the win. Pete Nance led Northwestern (5-2) with 15 points and Boo Buie added 12.

Monday, Nov. 29 results

  • IOWA 75, VIRGINIA 74: The Hawkeyes frittered away a 22-point lead, but Iowa (7-0) remained unbeaten when Joe Toussaint hit a jump shot with 8 seconds to regain the lead. Virginia (5-3) had three chances on the final possession but could not score. Jordan Bohannon led the Hawkeyes with 20 points, including 6-of-9 three-pointers. Former Hoosier Armaan Franklin had three points for Virginia on 1-of-8 shooting.
  • ILLINOIS 82, NOTRE DAME 72: Kofi Cockburn scored 28 points and Alfonso Plummer added 21 as Illinois (4-2) rolled past Notre Dame. Cockburn was 11-of-16 from the field. Freshman Blake Wesley had 24 points off the bench for Notre Dame.

The Big Ten won the 2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge 7-5, thanks to their five ranked teams — Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Rutgers and Ohio State — all winning. Here are the results from last year's games.
