Point Spread: Hoosiers Record-Setting Underdog at Purdue on Saturday

Indiana and Purdue meet for the second time this season at Mackey Arena on Saturday night, and the No. 2 Boilermakers are huge favorites. It's been more than 15 years since the Hoosiers were such big underdogs. Here's the latest on the point spread, with a great history of both teams against the number.

WEST LAFAYETTE — When we use ''big'' and ''Purdue'' in the same sentence, it's usually when we're referring to 7-foot-4 Boilermakers center Zach Edey. But there's another good usage on Saturday, and it's a bit stunning.

What makes us shake our head? Well, in the big nationally televised rivalry game with Indiana that starts at 8 p.m. ET Saturday night, No. 2-ranked Purdue is a big 18.5-point favorite over the Hoosiers, according to the SISportsbook.com gambling website. The over/under is 148.5.

That's a monster.

Indiana has never been that big of an underdog in the three years of the Mike Woodson era, and it's not even close. The largest line the Hoosiers have faced all year was at Illinois, where they were 14.5-point dogs. Indiana, tied with 53 seconds to go, did cover in that 72-64 loss.

And last year's largest point spread for the underdog Hoosiers? That would have been at Purdue too, when they were 10-point underdogs. The Hoosiers won outright that day, led by Jalen Hood-Schifino's 35 points. So tread lightly here, right?

This spread is bigger than anything since a November 2018 game at No. 3 Duke, when Indiana was a 15.5-point underdog. More than 18.5? You have to go all the way back to early years of Tom Crean's rebuild, when they were heavy underdogs just about every night in that 6-25 season. They were 21.5-point underdogs at Michigan State in February of 2009.

This is not uncommon territory for the dominating Boilermakers during this Big Ten season. They were 18,.5-point favorites at home against Penn State as well, and 17.5-point favorites against Michigan.  They were 9.5-point favorites in Bloomington in January, and won by 21. It was Purdue's largest margin of victory at IU since 1934, a mere 90 years ago.

The Hoosiers have been hard to figure this past week. They lost at home as a big favorite to Penn State but then won as an underdog at Ohio State on Tuesday night. It's the fourth time they won outright as an underdog in the Big Ten this year. That's impressive, in a way. They are also dealing with injury concerns. Point guard Xavier Johnson is out and center Kel'el Ware came up lame at the end of Tuesday's win at Ohio State.

The game starts at 8 p.m. ET and is being televised on FOX. For all of the information on how to watch and a great preview of the game, CLICK HERE

  • JACK ANKONY COLUMN: A second-half comeback at Ohio State taught a young Indiana team a lot about winning, and players thought it could serve as a boost in momentum for the final eight games of the season. But a trip to Mackey Arena is next, and the challenge of stopping Zach Edey and all of Purdue’s great 3-point shooters may stop the momentum Indiana worked so hard to build. CLICK HERE
