Indiana Football Players in NFL, Week 2: Cam Jones Records First Career Tackle for Chiefs

Cam Jones, the former Indiana linebacker turned undrafted free agent for the Kansas City Chiefs, recorded his first ever NFL tackle on Sunday. Other former Hoosier football players also excelled, as Nick Westbrook-Ikhine scored a touchdown, and Micah McFadden provided his usual steady play at linebacker.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The young men wearing crimson jerseys on Saturday inside Lucas Oil Stadium weren't the only Hoosiers who played football this weekend.

Several former Indiana football players took to the field in the NFL during the second week of the season.

Here's a recap of what all eight former Indiana Hoosiers on active NFL rosters did:

Cam Jones First Career Tackle

After defying the odds and making the defending Super Bowl champions' roster as an undrafted free agent, former Indiana linebacker Cam Jones made his first career tackle in the NFL on Sunday.

Jones once again did not take the field on defense for the Kansas City Chiefs during their 17-9 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he played 15 snaps on special teams in the game, and received the second-best coverage grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF) of any player on his team, earning a 70.2 mark.

It's not a surprise to anyone who watched him during his time in Bloomington, but Jones is already proving his worth in Kansas City.

Micah McFadden, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine

Nick Westbrook-Ikhine became the first former Indiana football player to score a touchdown during the 2023 NFL season on Sunday. Late in a game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the former IU wideout caught a pass from quarterback Ryan Tannehill in the end zone, giving the Tennsessee Titans a 24-21 lead in the fourth quarter.

Stay on the lookout for a full story on Westbrook-Ikhine's touchdown later this week, which you can find here at HoosiersNow.com. The Titans play at Cleveland in Week 3, and that game will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. ET this Sunday.

As for the other Indiana regular in an NFL starting lineup, Micah McFadden was on the field for the New York Giants quite a bit during their historic comeback win over the Arizona Cardinals.

The former linebacker for the Hoosiers did not lead the Giants in tackles like he did during Week 1, but still tallied a solid five on the day. More importantly to McFadden himself, most likely, was New York notching the victory in this one after trailing Arizona 20-0 at half, and 28-7 early in the third quarter.

McFadden and the Giants will be back on the field very soon. New York is playing at San Francisco on Thursday night, as McFadden and Co. look to knock off the undefeated 49ers. That game will kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime.

  • New Orleans Saints at Green Bay Packers, Sunday, Sept. 24, 1:00 p.m. ET.
  • FREEMAN'S ONSIDE KICK: It's a play that will largely go forgotten because it occurred in a loss, but Chris Freeman's onside kick and Louis Moore's recovery against Louisville was perfectly executed and ignited an Indiana comeback Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Here's what went into the preparation, execution and what followed. CLICK HERE
  • JACK'S TAKE ON IU-LOUISVILLE: Indiana had an incredible second half against Louisville, and almost won the game thanks to a great game from quarterback Tayven Jackson, but were doomed by a slow start and a terrible play call on fourth-and-goal. CLICK HERE
  • GAME STORY, IU LOSES 21-14: Indiana's furious second half comeback fell short on Saturday, as the Hoosiers couldn't fully overcome a 21-0 halftime deficit against the Louisville Cardinals. CLICK HERE
  • WEEK 3 BIG TEN POWER RANKINGS: We're well into the 2023 college football season, and things have started to separate in the Big Ten. There's a clear top three in the conference, but also a whole lot disappointing squads, including two nearby teams that slid below Indiana in this week's rankings. CLICK HERE
