Kristian Welch was on the sideline late in Iowa's 17-12 loss to Penn State on Saturday night.

Coach Kirk Ferentz said after the game that the senior linebacker was "nicked up," and repeated that statement on Tuesday while previewing this week's game against Purdue.

"But we expect him to play," Ferentz said. "Hopefully, he'll be fine."

That's important for Iowa's defense, given that Welch is the team's leading tackler this season.

Welch has 47 stops, including three for loss. He also has a pass breakup, and a quarterback hurry.

Welch is the leader of a talented group of linebackers who have quietly put up impressive numbers.

Djimon Colbert has 30 tackles, including 1 1/2 for loss. He also has an interception and two pass breakups.

Nick Niemann has 24 tackles, including 1 1/2 for loss. He also has two quarterback hurries.

Dillon Doyle, a redshirt freshman, has eight tackles and has forced a fumble in six games. Seth Benson, another redshirt freshman, has eight tackles. Barrington Wade had five tackles.

Again, this group has been quietly effective. Welch is the leader, though, and his absence, even for a little while, is noticed.

Best and worst game — Much like the defensive line, it's hard to pick one. Consider that only one running back has rushed for more than 100 yards against the Hawkeyes this season. That's a testament to what Iowa has in the front seven.

Second-half outlook — This is a group with depth, and a good mix of experience and youth. Fundamentally sound, and that's important. Watch for the continued growth of Doyle and Benson.
