Mark Pope has to land the big names in the transfer portal this cycle

Mark Pope can't miss on elite players in the transfer portal this offseason.

In this story:

All of Big Blue Nation knows that this is a massive offseason for the Mark Pope tenure in Lexington. Pope’s team regressed from year one to year two, so it is make-or-break time for the leader of the Kentucky basketball program. The fan base is split down the middle almost evenly on who has faith in Coach Pope and who does not. The goal for Coach Pope this offseason needs to be getting an elite roster that has the entire fan base bought in.

Part of the downfall of last season for Coach Pope and the Wildcats was the fact that the staff missed on so many players in the portal who ended up being elite this season. The list of names this staff missed on is long, but the most obvious name is Yaxel Lendeborg, who has led Michigan to the Final Four.

There were many other elite players who Coach Pope missed out on in the portal, and he can’t make that same mistake this offseason. Pope gambled on some players in the portal who didn’t work out, and with the magnitude of this offseason, he can’t do it again.

There are going to be some elite players that hit the portal this offseason, and Coach Pope needs to land some of these guys. It feels like Coach Pope tried to get too cute with the roster construction last season rather than getting elite, sure-fire players. Talent wins basketball games, and there will be a ton of it in the portal, so Coach Pope needs to find it.

Point guard is going to be very important in the portal this offseason. It has been an issue for Coach Pope in both of his seasons, so he needs to make sure he has enough true point guards on this roster in case an injury happens. Shooting is another thing Pope needs to address in the portal. Shooting is a big part of the Pope offense, and this season, his team just didn’t have enough of it.

Pope knows the importance of this offseason, and I believe that is why he has made so many changes to his staff. He needs to make sure that he is taking the sure things in the transfer portal. To me, the sure things are the players who have proven success over multiple years, preferably in a high-major conference.

I expect Kentucky to be involved with many of the top dogs in the transfer portal and for Coach Pope to bring some of this elite talent to Lexington.
