Watch: Louisville's Ron English, M.J. Griffin Talk Start of Spring Practice

The Cardinals are into their first week of spring ball.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Earlier this week, the Louisville football program made their return to L&N Stadium and kicked off their month-long spring practice, taking some of their first on-field steps towards preparing for the 2023 season.

On top of welcoming a new head coach in Jeff Brohm, the Cardinals are also bringing in an almost entirely new assistant coaching staff. One of which is co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Ron English, who will be running the 4-2-5 defense at Louisville.

"I feel like it's a lot different," safety M.J. Griffin said Thursday following the Cardinals' second day of practice. "Everything is different. The scheme, how we got to communicate, the things that we have to do is way different. But I feel like we're adjusting pretty well, and I feel like we all like the defense."

English is one of several position assistants on Brohm's staff to have prior ties to the University of Louisville. He also served as the Cardinals' defensive coordinator back in 2008 under then-head coach Steve Kragthorpe.

"It's awesome to be here in Louisville," English said. "It feels like guys are invested. That's what it feels like. It feels like guys really are happy. ... They're invested in this program for the right reasons, because we all care about this town. We know that we're blessed to be in a town where we're the pro team. There are no other tickets being bought. So we got to do our job in that stadium."

Following Thursday's practice, English and Griffin took time to meet with the media. They discussed the start of spring practice, the change to the 4-2-5, the staff and their prior connections to the university and city and more.
