LSU catcher Saul Garza to miss fall ball after undergoing surgery on left thumb

LSU coach Paul Mainieri announced Friday that senior catcher Saul Garza would miss all of fall ball after undergoing surgery to repair an injury to his left thumb.
Garza hyperextended his left thumb over the summer while participating in the Cape Cod league, Mainieri said. The hope was for the injury to heal over time without surgery, but the pain was still there two months later.

He will miss the entire fall practice as a result.
“It’s unfortunate that Saul had to have the surgery, but he’ll be back at full strength in the spring.”

In the meantime, Mainieri and the coaching staff will get a good look at freshmen catchers Hayden Travinski out of Shreveport and Alex Milazzo out of Zachary.
In 2018, Garza batted .303 with 27 RBI and five homeruns, becoming one of the more reliable hitters on as the season rolled on.
