LSU Spring Football: Five Tigers Standing Out During Spring Camp

The Bayou Bengals enter their final week of spring ball with several players breaking out of their shell during camp.

LSU football enters the final week of Spring Camp with several Tigers stealing headlines over the last few weeks.

One name that continues to pop up is senior wide receiver Kyren Lacy. The seasoned veteran has shined throughout camp and looks poised for a breakout season for the purple and gold.

Aside from Lacy, who else has looked the part during camp? Who could carve out a role for this team in the fall?

Here are five players who have shined during spring ball:

No. 1: WR Kyren Lacy

Let's get this one out of the way early. Lacy has taken monumental strides throughout camp and his consistency is what has been a major takeaway. There is certainly a difference between looking the part during camp and having it translate to Saturday's in Death Valley, but Lacy has been impressive through the last few weeks. The connection he has with Garrett Nussmeier stands out as well. Lacy is a player they'll utilize in a variety of ways, but the crossing routes will be fun to watch. The long, lanky receiver has all the makings of piecing it together and consistency during the season will be key. Those within the program continue raving about Lacy and the leadership qualities he attains on the field and in the weight room.

“[Lacy] was easily distracted at times (before). What has happened here more than anything else is he has found the right zone to be in as it relates to practicing and preparation," Brian Kelly said on Saturday. "I think he learned a lot last year watching Malik and BT and the way they came to practice every day and how they performed. He’s going to have a breakout season because of it. I can see the way he takes over a practice now in terms of his ability.”

No. 2: Early-Enrollee CB PJ Woodland

The early-enrollee has turned heads over the last 10 days of camp. A player who has skyrocketed up the cornerback depth chart, those within the program have been raving about him since Day 1. Woodland was a modest three-star recruit, and a late addition to LSU's 2024 class, but is looking like an immediate impact player throughout camp. Woodland took first-team reps opposite of Ashton Stamps this week as he navigates his way to early playing time for the purple and gold. He's put on weight and the defensive staff remains high on what he provides LSU.

“Competitiveness. PJ Woodland is a competitor,” LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker said of Woodland. “ He’s feisty, he’s physical, and he can run. More than anything, for a freshman, we’ve thrown him out there with the ones some and thrown him out there against our top receivers and he competes. That’s where it starts, but he has the physical tools. He has long levers, he’s physical and he can run, so I’ve been impressed with him. It wasn’t easy. Those first three days before spring break I guarantee you he was saying ‘what in the world did I do coming here early?’ but he’s been really impressive these last few days.”

No. 3: WR Kyle Parker

The redshirt freshman wide receiver is another player who has received rave reviews from both the coaching staff and media in attendance. The youngster has flown up the depth chart and will be a player who takes significant snaps in a loaded wide receiver room this season. Yes, Lacy, Chris Hilton and Aaron Anderson have handled first team reps during camp, but Parker has taken his fair share of reps as well. LSU will utilize six receivers this season certainly with Lacy, Hilton, Anderson, Parker, CJ Daniels and Zavion Thomas looking the part. For Parker, the youngest of the bunch, he's been a key component this offseason and has taken strides in the right direction.

No. 4: OL Tyree Adams

LSU has LT Will Campbell, LG Garrett Dellinger, C DJ Chester, RG Miles Frazier and RT Emery Jones pencilled in as starters for the 2024 season, but it hasn't stopped redshirt freshman Tyree Adams from making some noise this offseason. It's clear o-line coach Brad Davis has his first team set, but Adams will be a go-to guy this season. We've seen Jones miss a practice due to a minor injury during camp already, and the first guy this program went to was Adams. He's emerged as a key rotation guy for the Tigers and those within football operations building are high on what he provides. Adams has been a stud through camp.

No. 5: Safety Sage Ryan

It would be unfair to not include veteran safety Sage Ryan on this list. He's been the most consistent defensive back during camp and has stolen headlines over the last few weeks, specifically after his three-interception day two Saturday's ago. Ryan has been a mad man on the football field throughout camp and looks poised for a big season for the Tigers. Ryan, along with Texas A&M transfer Jardin Gilbert, have handled starting safety duties and have been solid through camp. It's imperative Ryan carries his spring ball success into the fall in Tiger Stadium.

Honorable Mentions: Early-enrollee safety Dashawn McBryde, DT Jacobian Guillory and RB Kaleb Jackson.
