LSU Spring Football: The Practice Report From Tuesday

Brian Kelly and the Tigers returned to the field on Tuesday, different wide receiver rotation.

Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers returned to the practice field on Tuesday morning with rotations emerging as spring ball ramps up.

Here's a look into each position group with a few observations:

The Quarterbacks

- Garrett Nussmeier looks calm and composed during up-tempo work. He's navigating a new offense but remains at ease under Joe Sloan's scheme. He's been vocal and talking with early-enrollee Colin Hurley on a routine basis.

- The backup quarterback battle will be one to keep tabs on. The media has had four practices to take in with AJ Swann and Rickie Collins switching QB2 rolls each day. On Tuesday, it was Swann who took first reps as the second signal-caller.

- Hurley will be a fun one to watch as his journey in Baton Rouge unfolds. On Tuesday, the media had the chance for him to showcase his quick release and the youngster will surely benefit from extra time alongside Nussmeier and Co.

The Running Backs

- Veteran back Josh Williams is running as the first-team running back during spring ball with Kaleb Jackson splitting reps as well. The two are the only scholarship backs on the spring roster with Malachi Lane taking third-team snaps.

- Lane may be a walk-on, but he's looked impressive during the small sample size.

- There isn't much to take away from this position group. With only two scholarship players, Frank Wilson will have his work cut out for him during the spring Transfer Portal window where he'll have to add another player for depth.

The Wide Receivers

- Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton and Aaron Anderson were the first-team wide receivers on Tuesday. It's clear Lacy and Hilton have separated themselves from the pack, but the hunt for the third starting receiver will be fun to watch.

- Anderson has been the third starting receiver for the last two practices, but Kyle Parker remains a player competing for a starting spot alongside CJ Daniels and Zavion Thomas.

- Parker, Daniels and Thomas have taken a majority of second-team snaps with Shelton Sampson and Khai Prean also entering the mix.

- LSU has an embarrassment of riches at the wideout position and will have no shortage of players in Cortez Hankton's arsenal.

The Offensive Line

- From left to right: Will Campbell, Garrett Dellinger, DJ Chester, Miles Frazier and Emery Jones handled first-team reps on Tuesday. It's been the same lineup all camp with continuity shining.

- Tyree Adams has separated himself from the pack as the backup tackle. While Jones returns to full form, Adams has stepped in and looked the part. LSU is high on Adams and it's clear he'll get snaps this year.

The Defensive Line

- The first-team defensive line was Bradyn Swinson, Jacobian Guillory, Jalen Lee and Sai'vion Jones.

- Bo Davis, like Frank Wilson, has his work cut out for him this spring with a lack of depth. The spring portal window will be key for Davis to add two or three players.

The Linebackers

- Harold Perkins and Greg Penn III continue holding it down for this position group with Blake Baker taking a hands-on approach with this unit.

- We saw Baker develop former Tiger Damone Clark into a Butkus Award Finalist and it's clear he's looking to take Perkins under his wing this offseason.

- The Weeks Brothers (Whit and West) continue taking significant snaps as well with Whit's speed flashing at times. He's a player the Tigers remain high on and it'll be imperative he takes big reps during spring ball.

The Cornerbacks

- Ashton Stamps and Javien Toviano remain the first-team cornerbacks and have been paired together through all position drills. Corey Raymond has his corners in pairs with the two working side-by-side each day.

- Jyaire Brown continues working with the second-team through position drills with PJ Woodland and Jeremiah Hughes also pushing for that second-team slot.

- JK Johnson, who missed the 2023 season after suffering a lower-body injury, is a player those within the program are high on. He's working to get back to 100% and spring will be where he works to get into the swing of things.

The Safeties

- Jardin Gilbert and Major Burns have been the safeties working with the first-team. Burns has been working in the STAR role under Blake Baker's new defense.

- Sage Ryan has been the starting nickel for the Tigers during spring ball.

- Early-enrollee Dashawn McBryde will be a player to keep tabs. He's looked the part with his length and instincts with LSU high on what he can provide in Year 1. Look for him to be an immediate impact guy this fall in Baton Rouge.
