Five-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett shockingly signs with the Maryland Terrapins
Today has to be one of the greatest days in Mike Locksley's history as Maryland's head coach. Not only did four-star linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II sign with the team, the Terrapins shockingly acquired five-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett, who made the announcement on twitter.
The D.C. native has been a long-time LSU commit since April of this year but decided to flip the script. According to the 247Sports composite, Jarrett is the second-best football prospect in the District of Columbia, second-best wide receiver recruit in the country, and the 20th-best overall recruit in the nation.
A couple days ago, he announced on Twitter that he would not make a decision until February.
It is clear that things have changed now that he signed his letter of intent to join the Terrapins. He received offers from many of the best college football programs in the nation including LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee.
The 6-foot 208-pound receiver is a tremendous prospect with great straight-line speed, strength, and hands.
Here is 247Sports' evaluation of the Terrapins' most-recent recruit:
"Good frame and added upper-body strength and size after junor season. Has slot ability and can play wide. Outstanding body control. Accelerates well out of breaks. Knows how to set up a route. Soft, strong hands. Physical on contested throws. Elite speed and stop-start ability. Tough to re-route on jams. Plays composed. Tracks ball well. Has speed to out-run secondary. Has big-play ability. Needs to improve route running at top of route. Becoming more elusive in tight spaces is important. Blocking technique needs work. Immediate contributor at elite college program. Day 2 NFL draft prospect."
Jarrett becomes the first five-star recruit to join the Terrapins since Damian Prince in 2014 and is the highest-rated player to sign with Maryland since Stefon Diggs in 2012.
He should be an immediate starter to pair up with Dontay Demus Jr.
