Former Colorado State, Georgia Assistant George Helow joins Maryland Football coaching staff
In December, special teams coordinator John Papuchis decided to part ways with Maryland to join Florida State for the same position.
With that being the only vacancy in Mike Locksley's coaching staff, the Terrapins were able to find Papuchis' replacement.
Helow coached at Colorado State for four seasons. He served as the Rams' defensive graduate assistant in 2016, defensive quality coach in 2017, and safeties coach the past two years.
His history as an assistant is extensive. Prior to coaching at Colorado State, he was Georgia's defensive quality control coach for two seasons (2014-15) as well as Florida State's defensive graduate assistant in 2013. Helow began his coaching career coaching and learning under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2012.
He has been part of some of the nation's top college football programs and brings plenty experience to the table that the Terrapins need.
Not only has he coached in the college level, Helow also played college football at Ole Miss (2006-10). He was primarily a special teams player for the Rebels.
This might be one of the best hires on Locksley's coaching staff because Helow is a player's coach and speaks from experience. He will take leadership of Maryland's special teams unit that was one of the best in the Big Ten this past season, leading the conference with three touchdown returns.
The Terrapins brought a lot of quality talent in their 2020 recruiting class, which includes five-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett, four-star linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II, and three-star running back Isaiah Jacobs (brother of Oakland Raiders' RB Josh Jacobs).
Add the hire of Helow and this Maryland football team will be one of the most intriguing teams in all of college football in 2020.
