Wide receiver Sean Savoy leaves Maryland football
Wide receiver Sean Savoy is no longer with the Maryland football team, according to head coach Mike Locksley.
The 5-foot-9 184-pound receiver was a transfer from Virginia Tech. In his freshman year with the Hokies, he rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 24 attempts. He also caught 39 passes for 454 yards and four touchdowns. He was becoming one of the more dangerous slot receivers in college football, starting every game in 2017.
After an incredible 2017 season, Savoy was unable to reestablish himself in the starting lineup. He finished the 2018 season with only 193 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns. The D.C. native transferred to the University of Maryland this season to be closer to family but to also work his way into being a starter again.
With the news that receiver DJ Turner will miss the remainder of the season after a DUI, Savoy's opportunity to be the starter for Maryland has arrived. Despite joining former Hokie Josh Jackson in Maryland, neither player has had much success this season. In six games, Savoy caught six passes for 56 yards.
Maryland's football program has lost a lot over the course of the season. Not only did they lose Savoy, they also lost two recruits to decommitment from their 2020 class. Three freshman in safety Treron Collins, cornerback Ken Montgomery, and tight end Tyler Devera entered the transfer portal.
Although Savoy will not be with their football program, he will continue to take classes at Maryland.
The losses do not bode well for the future of Maryland football, as Locksley is trying to rebuild the Terrapins back to contenders in the Big 10.
The Maryland Terrapins will travel to East Lansing, Michigan to take on the Michigan State Spartans this Saturday.
