Report: Doug Nussmeier 'Emerges' as Miami Offensive Coordinator Candidate

Longtime college coach most recently spent five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys

Another former Michigan offensive coordinator to The U?

It didn't work out with Josh Gattis in Year No. 1 for Mario Cristobal, but a Thursday report on FootballScoop says Doug Nussmeier could be the next fit under the second-year Miami coach. Of course, the longtime assistant coach has been all over the sport, most recently in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys.

"Numerous sources over the past 48 hours have told FootballScoop that Doug Nussmeier has emerged as an strong candidate for the Canes’ top offensive spot," the report said.

But Nussmeier also has ties to Cristobal, as the two overlapped on Nick Saban's Alabama coaching staff back in 2013. Cristobal was the associate head coach and Nussmeier commanded the offense, where countless collaborations surely went down as Cristobal oversaw the offensive line and Nussmeier the quarterbacks in addition to their respective titles.

The report added that the duo has been in contact as recently as this week, while also noting potential NFL opportunities for Nussmeier this offseason after five years with the Cowboys. In addition to Alabama, offensive coordinator roles have been held by the new Miami candidate at Florida and Washington.

Gattis was let go by Cristobal on January 27 and various names have been rumored to be among those interested and/or targeted for the role. All Hurricanes sources recently ruled out one of the most polarizing, Scott Frost, from consideration.
