Spartan seniors on prestigious list of 50.

Michigan State men’s basketball seniors Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers are on the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list, announced Monday by The Los Angeles Athletic Club. Michigan State is one of just six schools with more than one player on the list. The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor.

Lucas averaged 14.8 points and 4.0 assists last season, leading MSU in both categories. He was a First-team All-Big Ten honoree for a second straight season. One of just four honorees on the 2010-11 preseason list that also appeared on last year’s final ballot, Lucas spent the offseason rehabbing from a left Achilles injury suffered in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Summers averaged 11.3 points and 4.7 rebounds last season. He elevated his play during the NCAA Tournament, averaging 18.8 points in five tournament games. For his efforts, he was named Most Outstanding Player of the Midwest Regional.

Other Big Ten honorees include Illinois ’ Demetri McCamey, Northwestern’s John Shurna, Ohio State ’s William Buford, Penn State ’s Talor Battle, Purdue’s Robbie Hummel, JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore, and Wisconsin ’s Jon Leuer.
