Freshman Kelsey Smith to Redshirt the 2009-10 Season

EAST LANSING, Mich. -   Michigan State women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant announced Wednesday that freshman Kelsey Smith will redshirt the 2009-10 season. Smith had not appeared in any of the Spartans’ first six games this season.

Smith, a 6-4 center from St. Charles , Ill. , was a three-time honorable mention Street & Smith All-American out of St. Charles North High School . She was ranked No. 54 by Blue Star Report, No. 67 Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and No. 89 by Hoopgurlz in the recruiting class of 2009, after leaving high school as the school’s all-time leader in points, rebounds and blocks; tallying over 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 blocks. In addition, Smith was a three-time all-state selection by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) and the Courier-News, and a two-time all-state choice by the Chicago Sun Times.
