 CLEARWATER, Fla. - Behind Megan Hair’s first-career perfect game, the MSU softball team won its sixth straight, and improved to 9-6 with a doubleheader sweep (9-0, 8-0) of Saint Josephâ���™s on Tuesday evening at the EC Moore Complex. Hair’s flawless game was the first in the Big Ten Conference this season, and the first individual perfect-game performance in MSU history, as the only other recorded perfect outing was a combined effort by Becky Gray and Jessica Beech against IPFW during the 2002 season. Senior pitcher Rachel Turney started in the circle for the Spartans in game one, allowing just four hits in the complete-game victory, improving her record to 3-2 for the year. Michigan State posted strong offensive performances in both games versus the Hawks. Batting in the leadoff spot in game one, center fielder Nikki Nicosia went 3-for-5 with two singles, one triple and three runs scored for the Green and White. Sophomore catcher Kara Weigle added two hits, and left fielder Traci Nicosia contributed three hits, including one double and one RBI. First baseman Dayna Feenstra posted her strongest outing at the plate this season, contributing three hits, including one double and one home run. The Spartans scored one run in both the first and second inning before putting the game out of reach with three runs in the fourth sparked by a leadoff home run from Feenstra. State tallied two runs in the bottom half of the fifth behind a two-run single from right fielder Nicole Mercado, and added two runs in the seventh to close the 9-0 victory in game one. Hair made her sixth start of the season in game two versus the Hawks, and earned the perfect-game victory in 6.0 innings in the circle. Hair has one previous no-hitter in her Spartan career, as she earned her first collegiate victory versus Seton Hall at the ECU Pirate Classic allowing no hits in a complete-game effort last season. Third baseman Caitlin Mahoney tallied three singles, adding one run, while designated player Kelly Confer contributed one hit and two runs for the Green and White. Nikki Nicosia went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and one stolen base, and Dana Rosenblatt added two RBI and her first triple of the season. Confer and Meghan Darhower reached on consecutive errors by the Hawks infield to leadoff the second inning. Rosenblatt followed with a two-run triple, and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Mercado for a 3-0 Spartan advantage. MSU added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, before Confer gave State an 8-0 edge with a two-run single in the sixth. Michigan State continues tournament play, March 8-11 at the USF-Adidas Invitational.
