EAST LANSING, Mich. –

Michigan State senior gymnast Kathryn Mahoney (Western Springs, Ill.), who underwent successful surgery to stabilize her C6 vertebra after fracturing it while vaulting in a Dec. 29 practice, was discharged from Sparrow Hospital Thursday and relocated to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

“The Michigan State coaching staff, team members, and the Mahoney family would like to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time,” MSU gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages said. “We are one week into this situation, and Kathryn has made some incredible progress in a very short time. We ask that you continue to pray for Kathryn each and every day.”

“I was there at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago when she was admitted,” MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said. “RIC is a truly amazing facility. It has been ranked as the No. 1 rehabilitation hospital for 20 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. Kathryn will receive first-class care.”

Cards can be mailed to Kathryn Mahoney at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago: 345 E. Superior St., Chicago, ILÂ 60611.

In addition, a fund has been set up for Kathryn Mahoney at the MSU Federal Credit Union, and donations will be used for any necessities that she needs as she begins the post-operative, recovery stage. Checks should be made payable to “Kathryn Mahoney Fund” and mailed to either the Michigan State Federal Credit Union, 3777 West Rd., East Lansing, MI 48823 or MSU Gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages, 312 Jenison Field House, East Lansing, MI 48824-1025. People can also call (517) 333-2424 and make a deposit via virtual check at no additional cost.

“This season, we are competing for Kathryn Mahoney and dedicating everything we do this year for her and for her recovery process,” senior Nikki Argiros said.

“These past several weeks have really shown just how strong this team is,” sophomore Shanthi Teike said. “After losing Kathryn last week to her injury, we really hope to do the best we can this year in dedication for her, and everything she has done for this program.”
