Michigan State Volleyball Opens the Season 8-1!

Alexis Mathews Sweeps Volleyball Past SIUE, 3-0

Mathews tallies career-best 11 kills.

 

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Michigan State volleyball team (8-1) concluded action at the Best Western Falcon Invitational with a 3-0 sweep over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Saturday (Sept. 10) night in Bowling Green, Ohio. Leading the Spartans in the final match was sophomore Alexis Mathews with her career-best 11 kills and .667 hitting mark.

 

Michigan State looked to close out the road trip on a high note, and opened the set strong with a 7-4 lead. The Green and White continued a 9-2 run to force SIUE into its first timeout of the match at 11-5. The Cougars got within two at 16-14; however the Spartans took three straight to cause Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s second timeout at 19-14. The lead got to six at 20-14, before the set finally ended at 25-20. Mathews recorded four kills for a team-best mark.

 

Set two opened strong for the Spartans, as they earned the first four points to hold a 4-0 lead. SIUE rallied back within two at 6-4 before MSU pushed its lead to six at 10-4, causing the Cougars to call a timeout. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville clawed back to within four at 16-12, but a 7-0 rally for the Spartans put them in front, 23-12. Michigan State closed out set two with a 25-16 win to hold a 2-0 advantage. Mathews continued her offensive prowl with five kills.

 

MSU closed out the final set of the weekend with an early 9-3 lead, forcing SIUE to call a timeout. The Spartans’ lead was pushed to nine at 13-4. The Green and White kept pushing offensively as the score was doubled at 20-10, forcing the Cougars to call their final timeout of the match. Set three came to an end with the score 25-17. Senior Kyndra Abron tallied five kills in the final set.

 

Earning all-tournament honors for the Green and White was Abron and Mathews. Over the course of the weekend, Abron posted 44 kills (4.40 kills per set) along with 13 blocks (1.30 blocks per set). Mathews was second on the team with 27 kills (2.70 kills per set) while leading the team in blocks with 16 (1.60 blocks per set).

 

Sophomore Kristen Kelsay led the team with 19 assists and senior Natalie Emro added 11 assists. Defensively, freshman Kori Moster tallied a team-best 11 digs. At the net, sophomore Kelsey Kuipers led MSU with five blocks. Abron joined Mathews offensively with 10 kills.

 

The Spartans return home next weekend to close out the non-conference schedule hosting the Spartan Invitational.
