Michigan State Women's Basketball Coach Suzy Merchant Continues to Stockpile Talent

MSU Women’s Basketball Receives Letter of Intent from Mariah Harris

Harris will begin her Spartan career in the 2012-13 season.

 

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball head coach Suzy Merchant announced the signing of Mariah Harris (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) to a National Letter of Intent on Thursday.

 

“Mariah brings versatility to our program,” said Merchant. “She can face up, post up, and has tremendous passing skills which will be critical to our team's interior play. She is a tough matchup for opponents and we look forward to taking advantage of that in our system.”

 

Harris, a 5-11 guard from Springfield, Ohio, has started all 71 games in her first three high school seasons, scoring 1,032 points. Her career line so far is 14.5 points, 8.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 3.8 steals. Harris has led Kenton Ridge High School and head coach Ed Foulk to a 58-13 record in her first three seasons, including a 36-6 mark in conference play. Collegiate Girls Basketball Report ranks Harris as the No. 44 overall prospect in the Class of 2012.

 

Harris had a laundry list of accomplishments as a junior, earning special mention all-state by the Associated Press and Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), sharing the Central Buckeye Conference and News Sun Player of the Year honors, and being named first-team all-conference, all-county and all-district. She averaged 19.9 points, good for second in the conference, and led the league with 11.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists, while also adding 4.2 steals and 1.3 blocks. Harris had five triple-doubles, and posted career-highs during the season of 36 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists. Kenton Ridge went 19-5 overall and finished first in the Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division at 9-1.

 

As a sophomore, Harris averaged 12.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 3.2 steals and 1.1 blocks. Meanwhile, as a freshman, she led Kenton Ridge in rebounds (8.3) and assists (6.9), also a conference-high, while adding 11.6 points, 4.1 steals and 2.0 blocks. She was a three-time first-team all-conference and all-country selection. Harris plays AAU for Ohio Glory and coach Marwan Miller. The daughter of John Harris and Kim Beverly, she has one brother Jevon.
