Sarah Burnham Ties for Seventh at Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships

As a team, Spartans tie for ninth place with a 12-over-par 876.

INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore Sarah Burnham led the Michigan State women’s golf team at the Big Ten Championships by tying for seventh place with a 4-under-par 212, the lowest 54-hole score ever by a Spartan at the conference tournament. As a team, the Spartans tied for ninth place with a 12-over-par 876 (292-286-298) after shooting 10-over 298 in the third round.

The three-day tournament concluded Sunday at The Fort Golf Resort. No. 7 Northwestern and No. 36 Ohio State split the Big Ten title by both shooting 12-under 852.

Burnham carded a 73 in the third round after entering the day tied for second place. Her total of 212 (70-69-73) tied for the eighth-lowest 54-hole score in program history and just missed her career low score of 211. It marked Burnham’s sixth top-10 finish of the season.

Purdue’s August Kim claimed medalist honors with a 9-under 207.

Although Michigan State tied for ninth, its team score of 876 was still its lowest 54-hole score at the Big Ten Championships (54-hole format from 1981-84; 2012-present).

Senior Alison Knowles equaled Burnham’s 73 on Sunday to tie for the best round of the day and finished tied for 30th place at 4-over 220 (75-72-73).

Sophomore Jacqueline Setas shot the third-lowest score for MSU in the third round with a 75. She tied for 50th overall with a 225 (75-75-75).

Senior Gabby Yurik (78-70-78) and redshirt sophomore Katie Sharp (72-77-77) both tied for 54th at 10-over 226, while freshman Carolyn Markley tied for 71st at 229 (76-76-77).

The Spartans will learn their NCAA fate on Monday at 6 p.m. as the field for the NCAA Championships is announced live on the Golf Channel. The Spartans, who entered the week ranked No. 34 by Golfweek and No. 40 by Golfstat, are looking for their 17th NCAA Regional bid in the last 18 years.
