MSU Junior Women’s Golfer Caroline Powers Ties School Record at Regional Challenge

PALOS VERDES, Calif. – Junior women’s golfer Caroline Powers tied a school record with a 3-under 68 in the second round of the Regional Challenge Tuesday at Palos Verdes Country Club. It marks the second time in Powers’ career she has carded a 68, as she also accomplished the feat during the fall season on Oct. 8 at the Tar Heel Invitational. Overall, it’s just the eighth round of 68 in the history of the program.

Powers is also only the second Spartan to turn in a round of 68 twice, along with Laura Kueny.

The record score moved Powers up the leaderboard into a tie for fourth place with a 1-over 143 (75-68) heading into Wednesday’s third and final round. She is just three shots back from leader Lindy Duncan of Duke.

As a team, the Spartans improved five shots on Tuesday with a 13-over 297 and stand in eighth place at 599 (302-297).

Powers started her historic round with birdies on holes 10 and 11, but dropped back to even with double bogey on the par 4 12th. She closed her first nine with three pars, two birdies and a bogey on the 18th to stand at 1-under 35.

Following the turn, Powers recorded four straight pars on holes 1-4, then birdied three of her next four holes. Although she bogeyed the par 5 7th, she bounced back with a birdie on the par 3 8th, then finished with a par on 9 to finish with a 33 and a 68 for the round. She had a total of seven birdies.

Christine Meier also had her best round of the season, compiling an even par 71 to jump into a tie for 14th place. The sophomore from Rochester Hills, Mich., used six birdies, seven pars, four bogeys and one double bogey to end up at even par for the round. Overall, Meier is 5-over with a 147 (76-71).

Allyssa Ferrell shot a 78 for the second consecutive day and is 14-over through two rounds (78-78—156).

Liz Nagel rounded out the team scoring for MSU on Tuesday with an 80. Nagel owns a score of 161 (81-80).

After leading the Spartans with a 73 on Monday, Lindsey Solberg carded an 81 in the second round and is now tied for 48th place with a 12-over 154 (73-81).

Top-ranked UCLA continues to lead the elite 15-team tournament with a 570 (284-286), followed by No. 4 USC (297-291—588) and No. 38 Pepperdine (300-292—592).

The final round of the Regional Challenge will start with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
