MADISON, Wis. – The 12th-ranked Michigan State women’s golf team is in second place at the Big Ten Championships after 36 holes of action Friday at Wisconsin’s University Ridge Golf Course. Led by a second-round 68, senior Laura Kueny is tied for second, just one shot behind Michigan’s Ashley Bauer.

 

The Spartans trail No. 8 Purdue by 15 shots heading into Saturday’s third round. MSU shot a 10-over 586 (296-290) on the day, while the Boilermakers carded a 5-under 571 (289-282). 

 

Kueny’s 68 was her lowest career round in Big Ten Championships play. She finished at 4-under with a 140 (72-68). Her second round was fueled by three birdies and an eagle on the front nine, and she added two more birdies on the back nine to close out the day.

 

Playing in her first Big Ten Championships, freshman Caroline Powers shot the second-best score for MSU on Friday with a 3-over 147. She started with a 75 in the first round, and was even stronger in the second round with an even-par 72. Powers begins Saturday in a tie for 13th place overall.

 

Coming off a strong performance at the Lady Buckeye Invitational last weekend, sophomore Lindsey Solberg shot a 151 (74-77) on Friday to sit in a tie for 24th place.

 

Junior Aimee Neff is just one shot behind Solberg with 8-over 152. Neff carded a 75 in the first round and finished with a 77 in the second.

 

Natalie Brehm’s second round of 73 counted toward the team’s score, and she closed the day in a tie for 31st with a 153 (80-73).

 

Shannon Warner is in a tie for 41st at 155 (77-78).

 

The third round of the Big Ten Championships is set to begin Saturday at 10 a.m.
