Spartan Nation's Jack Newman Prepares for PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic

Newman begins his first round on Thursday morning at 9:44 a.m. ET off the 10th tee .

 

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State rising senior Jack Newman will make his second PGA Tour appearance this week at the John Deere Classic, held at TPC Deere Run in Silvis , Ill.  Newman, who received a sponsor exemption, will begin his first round off the 10th hole on Thursday, July 9 at 9:44 a.m. ET, paired with Wil Collins and Tommy Gainey. His second round is scheduled to start at 2:44 p.m. ET.

 

Newman made his PGA Tour debut at the Masters this April, finishing in a tie for 65th, becoming the first Spartan to appear in golf’s most prestigious championship. A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Newman led the Spartans this season with a 72.87 scoring average, good for fourth best in a MSU single-season, in addition to four top-five and seven top-10 finishes. For his career, he is fourth on the MSU stroke average list at 74.09. 

 

Former Spartan Andrew Ruthkoski will also be in the field this week. He is scheduled to tee off on Thursday in the group behind Newman (9:54 a.m. ET) with James Oh and Scott Gutschewski. Ruthkoski, who played for Michigan State from 2001-05, will also be making his second PGA Tour appearance, having also played in the 2006 Buick Open. A First Team All-Big Ten selection as a senior, Ruthkoski tied for fifth on the Spartans’ career scoring average list at 74.19. 

 

The John Deere Classic first and second rounds can be seen live on the Golf Channel from 3-6 p.m. ET, while the weekend rounds will air live on CBS from 3-6 p.m. ET. Also, this week’s action can be heard live on Sirius XM from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. ET everyday.
