Spartans in Contention to Make NCAA Women’s Golf Championships

Needing a top-six finish to advance to nationals, MSU is in seventh place at NCAA Stanford Regional heading into Saturday’s final round.

STANFORD, Calif. – After two rounds of play at the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Michigan State women’s golf team is in seventh place in the 18-team tournament with a 24-over-par 592 (291-301). The No. 42 Spartans need to finish in the top six in the 54-hole event to qualify for the NCAA Championships; MSU heads into Saturday’s final round just one stroke behind sixth-place North Carolina (591).

No. 12 Stanford is in first place at 569, two shots ahead of No. 2 USC (571). No. 31 Ohio State (584), No. 15 Virginia (584) and No. 7 Arkansas (589) round out the top five.

Only five strokes separate sixth-place North Carolina (591) and 12th-place San Diego State (596).

Sophomore Sarah Burnham carded her second consecutive round of even-par 71 and is tied for sixth place at 142. Burnham birdied two of her first five holes and only had two bogeys all day while scoring par on 14 holes.

Burnham is three shots back of co-leaders Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford (69-70—139) and Alana Uriell of Arkansas (72-67—139).

Senior Alison Knowles shot a 1-over 72 for the second-best round of the day for MSU. She moved up 22 places on the leaderboard into a tie for 30th place at 6-over 148 (76-72).

Senior Gabby Yurik and redshirt sophomore Katie Sharp both carded a 79 to round out the team scoring on Friday. Sharp is tied for 62nd (74-79—153) and Yurik is in 88th place (81-79—160).

Freshman Carolyn Markley is tied for 56th (70-82—152).

Michigan State will tee off at 7:30 a.m. PT (10:30 a.m. ET) on hole one in Saturday’s third round, along with Pepperdine and Wake Forest. Live coverage is available at golfstat.com.

The NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 20-25 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
