EAST LANSING, Mich. – Junior Carli Weiler and redshirt freshman Alexis Mathews were honored as one of 36 players selected for the 2011 U.S. Women’s National A2 Program roster, as announced by USA Volleyball on March 17. The selected individuals, all with collegiate eligibility remaining, will travel to Dallas, Texas from May 23 through June 1 to train and compete in the 2011 USA Volleyball Open National Championships.

"This is a great opportunity for both Carli and Alexis," Michigan State head coach Cathy George said. "This is very well-deserved. They have both worked hard this offseason to put themselves into a position to be selected for this competition."

During the training sessions in Dallas, the coaching staff will divide the 36 players into three teams of 12 players to compete in the USA Volleyball Open National Championships. Last year, two A2 teams competed in the Open Division, producing a gold and bronze medal.

Weiler and Mathews give MSU three student-athletes to be selected to compete with the A2 Program. Former Spartan Katie Johnson competed in Austin, Texas at the USA Volleyball Adult Open Championships in 2007 as a junior at MSU.

Mathews started 30 of 31 matches for Michigan State as a redshirt freshman in 2010. She compiled averages of 1.27 blocks and 1.44 kills per set last fall. Mathews finished the regular season as the Big Ten Conference freshman leader in blocks and was the only underclassman ranked among the top 10 in conference matches only.

Weiler averaged 2.57 digs per set last fall in her junior season at Michigan State. She also totaled 574 reception attempts with only 23 errors for a .960 percentage. Weiler played in 27 matches as a junior with two starts at libero.
