Spartans Seeking Stars form Jersey, Florida, Chicago to Round Out 2010 Class
With massive Ohio offensive tackle Skyler Schofner committing and 2010 recruiting approaching the finish line in early February, the Spartan football program is looking to land a select few more student athletes to round out what is considered by most observers an outstanding class of prospects.
One player to keep a close eye on is Sherard Cadogan. The 6-foot-3, 230 pound athlete is being recruited by MSU as a rush defensive end, though, at the next level, Cadogan could play a hybrid D-end/linebacker position as well as tight end on offense. The New Jersey native has made official visits to his favorite schools, including MSU, and could come to a decision sometime within the next month.
While MSU has William Gholston already committed to this class, stockpiling talented pass rushers is never a bad idea. And while the Spartans have had some success pressuring the opposing teams’ quarterbacks this season, much of it has come with the help of linebackers blitzing. That may be a positive for the stat sheets of Greg Jones and Eric Gordon, but producing a consistent pass rush from the front four is vital if MSU wants to continue its ascent into the upper echelon of the Big Ten.
With the attrition MSU is seeing at running back, with Caulton Ray and Andre Anderson now off the roster and A.J. Jimmerson graduating this season, the influx of freshman this season won’t go as far building the depth chart as previously anticipated. Chelsea’s Nick Hill has already committed to MSU, but the Spartan coaching staff has their eyes on another back from Florida.
Fort Lauderdale’s James White visited MSU for the Penn State game and could be that final offensive piece of the puzzle for MSU’s 2010 class.  He has the Spartans on his final list of favorites and, like Cadogan, could also be making a decision in the very near future.
Finally, Chicago’s Bruce Gaston is one bulldozing defensive tackle the Spartan coaching staff would love to ink come national signing day. While Purdue and Notre Dame have been the heaviest hitters in the contest to land Gaston, Michigan State has been a consistent recruiting presence. Offensive line coach Dan Roushar has consistently recruited the Chicago area and Gaston could be the first player since Arthur Ray to commit to MSU from the Second City.
MSU may be considered a long shot for the 6-foot-3, 300 pound tackle, but Gaston has mentioned wanting to visit MSU.  The Spartans are clearly looking to add depth to an overachieving D-line. And in the Big Ten, where the hogs are as big as houses on offense, a team can’t have enough stout-bodied young men filling up the middle of the D.
With 15 young men committed to play for head coach Mark Dantonio, MSU is running out of scholarships fast. The defense will be a focus in the final weeks and months of the 2010 recruiting season, especially on the defensive line. But talent is what matters most. Compared to Tom Izzo’s basketball juggernaut, which secured a top-5 recruiting class last week, Dantonio’s program has a ways to go. But, like the team reaching a bowl game for the third consecutive season, Michigan State football is reaching milestones and Spartan fans are celebrating accomplishments they have not seen in many years.
