EAST LANSING, Mich. – Former Michigan State women’s golfer Laura Kueny has been selected to participate in the upcoming World University Golf Championship held June 8-11 in Antequera, Spain. The 13th annual event, which is part of the World University Games, is sponsored by the International University Sports Federation.

The golf competition will feature at least 12 countries, including golfers from Italy, Spain, France, Ireland, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Russia and Taiwan, as well as the United States. The event features individual competition and team completion. Each country can take five female players: three play as the team, counting the best two scores each day over a total of 72 holes for the tournament, while the other two play for medalist honors as individuals.

Kueny recently completed her Spartan career as the most decorated golfer in program history. She was named a second-team All-American by the National Golf Coaches Association after setting an MSU single-season record in 2009-10 with a 73.85 scoring average. The Whitehall, Mich., native was also named the Big Ten Golfer of the Year and was selected first-team All-Big Ten for the third straight season.

Kueny won the Lady Buckeye Invitational in April and finished runner-up at the Tar Heel Invitational and the Gator Invitational. Overall, she posted eight top-10 finishes in 11 events this season and five in the top five, including a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships.

Following the regular season, Kueny qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open and will participate in the prestigious tournament July 8-11 in Oakmont, Pa.

In addition, Kueny also set the MSU career scoring average record with a 74.60 mark, surpassing Sara Brown's previous record of 75.27. Kueny leaves Michigan State with three of the top seven single-season scoring averages in program history, as her 74.50 average in 2008-09 ranks fourth and her 75.03 in 2007-08 ranks seventh. She is also the only player at MSU to shoot two rounds of 68, which is tied for the school single-round record.

Kueny is the sixth player from the Spartan women’s golf program to participate in the World University Golf Championship, joining Lisa Marino (1987), Kasey Gant (1998), Allison Fouch (2002), Sarah Martin (2004) and Sara Brown (2006).
