Can you feel it, friends? Can you feel it in the air? Do you feel winter’s grasp loosening and spring slowly moving into Michigan? We all know what that means! It means that a week from this Monday, the district tournament will begin. The best will be separated from the rest and a month from Saturday we will be crowing the new kings of the court. We haven’t reached that point yet, so let’s get into our regular prep basketball column.

Low Score of the Week
Traverse City St. Francis 43 Boyne City 23 (66 points)

Led by Holden Greiner’s 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, the Gladiators beat Boyne City. Tyler Hooper scored nine and Ian Sheldon chipped in with eight. TCSF dominated in rebounding with a 35-13 edge. Tyler Urman had nine points for Boyne City. St. Francis is 17-1 on the season. Their only blemish was a 62-59 loss to Charlevoix in early January.

High Score of the Week
Charlevoix 92 Kalkaska 81 (173 points)

All the starters for Charlevoix scored in double digits in their win over Kalkaska. Leading the Rayders was Justin Friske with 23 points and eight rebounds. Thomas Parrish and Weston Bryan each scored 16. Leading all scorers was Kalkaska’s Travis Schuba with 29 points. His teammate John Kasza tossed in 21 points.

Baraga 80 Wakefield 23 (57 points)

It’s been a tough season for Wakefield. They have one victory on the season, a six point victory over Bessemer. In this game, only three players scored for Wakefield and Tyler Adams had 15 of the points. Kyle Maki led Baraga with 13 points. Baraga was able to use their press to take a 21-2 first quarter lead, a 43-15 halftime lead, and the eventual 80-23 victory.

Country Day Falls

Detroit Country Day lost their first game of the season this past week. They lost by six points (73-67) to Bloomington South (Indiana). Interestingly, Country Day was ranked #4 by USA Today and Bloomington South was ranked #5. Turnovers killed any hope that the Yellowjackets had at a comeback victory. Ray McCallum Jr. and Amir Williams each had 17 points to lead DCD

PSL belongs to Pershing

Juwan Howard’s son, also named Juwan Howard, was the difference in the game for Detroit Pershing. He scored 22 points. Keith Appling had 13 and Derrick Nix tossed in nine points. It was Pershing’s first championship in 16 years with their 79-58 victory. Even though Detroit Southeastern lost the game, they have had a great season and still have something to prove in the playoffs. Over 5,000 people showed up for the game.
