Boys BBall Be Jammin'
Hello from Spartan Nation’s favorite (and only, I think) columnist who is also a coach. (Wait a second; if I’m the only one, then I must also be the most hated!) This past week of basketball action gave us some great games. There were also some real stinkers. Has anyone been outside, shooting hoops with the great weather we’ve been having? Personally, I don’t like it. The skating rink I had been playing hockey on is now a pond with plastic at the bottom. I thought about giving a 10 page dissertation on why hockey is cooler than baseball, but since this is a basketball column at this time of year, I figured that I’d lay off. Let’s get to the action on the court!
High Score of the Week
Ottawa Lake Whiteford 96 Whitmore Lake 95 (OT) (191 points)
It was a team effort in this wild victory. Brandon Albright had 40 points for Ottawa Lake. Jake DuPree had 22, including a half court three pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime. Forrest Gorsteffon scored 12 and hit the game winner with six seconds remaining. Chase St Charles led Whitmore Lake with 19 points.
Low Score of the Week
Gladstone 29 Marquette 27 (56 points)
Gladstone coach Dale Hongisto slowed down his offense and walked out victorious thanks to John Cretens. Cretens launched a prayer shot before the buzzer sounded with two players in his face which went in. He also led the Braves in scoring with nine. Tyler Geary also scored nine for Marquette. Gladstone’s best player, Andy Lauscher, was sick and could not play, making his coach go to the slowed down version of basketball.

Detroit Middletown Academy 91 Riverside Academy (Dearborn) 16 (78 points)
Come on Riverside Athletic Director! Find a better game than this! This does nothing for either team. Get on the phone with Jackson Home School or SASA…anybody! Riverside is a charter school that, according to their website, places a lot of emphasis on character, and you know their basketball team didn’t give up. Ashton Manson and Luther Hunger each scored 16 for Middletown. Hey Middletown, JOIN A LEAGUE! Maybe the Detroit Public School League will let you in!
Yellowjackets Sting Lumberjacks
Two of the top teams in the state, regardless of class, battled it out this past Saturday. Class B Detroit Country Day beat Class A Saginaw Arthur Hill 77-73. Like in their loss to Saginaw High, missed free throws played a large role in the losing effort. With only four points separating Country Day from Arthur Hill, missing 13 free throws is a killer. Maurice Jones led the Lumberjacks with 25 points and seven assists. Mike Schaaf contributed with 13 points and had to battle 6’10 Amir Williams and 6’11†Dashonte Riley.
