It’s finally here. After weeks and week of me saying that it’s getting closer, the basketball districts are here and we will have moved past the districts by the weekend. The middle of next week will have given us the regional winners and show that will be playing in the quarterfinals. There is a lot of excitement for these young men at this time of year. Only time will tell if they can pull off a state championship. Oh, you want to hear about this week’s scores? Then say so! Here we go!

High Score of the Week (Or Saginaw High vs. Arthur Hill Part Three)
Arthur Hill 92 Saginaw High 80 (172 points)

The third time was the charm for the Lumberjacks. The smallest guy on the court made the biggest impact. 5’7” Maurice Jones dropped 35 points for Arthur Hill. Saginaw High’s guards, Mike Green and Jimmy Davis got into foul trouble early and spent too much time on the bench. Mike Green did score 24 points on the night though. Jones said that winning this game gives Arthur Hill confidence and hope that they will bring a fourth consecutive Class A basketball championship to the Saginaw Public School District.

Low Score of the Week
Kalamazoo Central 33 Portage Northern 23 (56 points)

Typically, Kzoo Central plays a fast break kind of basketball, but Portage Northern would have nothing to do with that. Heck, NOBODY scored in the third quarter. Portage used a stall tactic that helped them stay close. When you are playing the second ranked team in Class A, you take what you can get. High scorer for Kalamazoo was Juwan Hemphill with seven points. He was outscored by Portage’s Kyle Davis who had eight points.

Coach Cottrell’s Blowout of the Week
Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian 77 Holland Calvary 18 (59 points)

The Districts gave us another week in which the margin of victory for the Blowout of the Week was larger than the total for the Low Score of the Week. Most of Tri-Unity scored (13 plays had at least one point). Leading the way was Nick Mascarro with 14 points and Drew Scafe with 10 for Tri-Unity. Those two players outscored Holland’s whole team!

Troy 64 Troy Athens 58 (3OT)

First, it was Rashaun Lowery’s two free throws with 12 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Then, at the end of the first OT, he held the ball and took the last shot as time expired. It went in and out, forcing yet another overtime. Next, it was Bobby Wunderlich who ran the same play and couldn’t make the shot. Finally in the third overtime, Troy decided to go at them and not to play the stalling game. It worked and Troy won the game. Lowery had 23 points and Wunderlich had 14 with 10 rebounds. Larry Yelder scored 17 for Troy Athens.
