Hello again Spartans and Friends! Hope all is going as well as things can for you these days. We are winding down the season and heading towards those tough district games. Lots of excitement this past week, with three teams hitting the century mark and others were getting beaten up on. Also on tap this week (tomorrow) is the Detroit Public School League basketball championship game. Let’s get into some roundball!

Century Club Revisited
Three teams hit the 100 point mark this past week.

Gwinn 100 Stephenson 70
This game must have been exciting for both teams. It’s not often that a team in the UP scores this much. I bet a lot of people left that night with a sore throat!

Detroit Pershing 101 Detroit Renaissance 74
Derrick Nix played big time. He scored 34 points and rebounded 21 balls. Keith Appling chipped in 14 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Dan Sutherlin scored 29 for Renaissance.

High Score of the Week
Kalamazoo Central 106 North Chicago 88 (194 points)

The third team to hit the 100 point mark was also the high score of the week. T.J. Cameron lead all scorers with 25 points. Forward Doug Anderson tallied 23 points and 10 rebounds. Devin Oliver had 21 points to go along with his 11 boards.

Franklin Road Christian School 70 Calvary Christian Academy 16

The Warriors played some tough defense. They were led by David Mansfield who scored 14 points, dished out 10 assists, blocked six shots, and pulled down 13 rebounds. Leading scorers were Jalen Walker and Nick Ward with 16 points each.

Low Score of the Week
Bangor 38 Bloomingdale 26

The Vikings of Bangor started out hot. They had 18 points in the first quarter. Then it came crashing down in the second period. Bangor made one of ten shots in the second. The Vikings played well enough to win in the end. Shiron Williams had a good night with 15 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and six steals. Josh Bosby and Andy Carson each had six points for the Cardinals of Bloomingdale.

Detroit Public School League Championship

The big game this week is Friday night down at Calihan Hall on the campus of the University of Detroit Mercy where the two top teams in the PSL will square off. Detroit Southeastern beat Detroit Henry Ford for the right to take on Detroit Pershing. Pershing beat Renaissance, as we examined earlier. The Jungaleers haven’t won a PSL title since 1956. Pershing hasn’t won the PSL in 13 years. Both teams are hungry for that league championship trophy. Southeastern did beat the Doughboys back in January. They will be ready to play and it’s anyone’s guess as to who will win (but, don’t forget that Pershing has two future Spartans, Derrick Nix – ‘09 and Keith Appling – ‘10!). Good luck, men!
