At this point, there are teams who have already clinched a playoff spot. They need to continue to play good football and not get injured/recover from injuries. Now, with three games left in the season, they should be starting to play the best football of the year. Some teams will continue strong play through the state championship game on Thanksgiving weekend, while others are already taking a peek at the first basketball opponent. All the teams written about this past week had perfect records. Unfortunately, half of those teams lost a first game and some lost with a very uneven score. Let’s move right into the games and see how they did.

Ithaca 33 Carrollton 21

It was a big game. Both teams knew that going in. It was very close, with the score knotted up at 21 at the halftime break. After halftime, the Yellowjackets defense came through in a big way, shutting down the potent rushing attack of Carrollton. Ithaca quarterback Travis Smith had a great night, completing 12 of his 26 passes for 191 yards and five touchdowns while also running the ball 13 times for another 71 yards. Markes Gadlen ran the ball three times for 20 yards and caught three passes for 34 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Caden Kipp hauled in three passes for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Sage DeMull only caught one, but it went 22 yards to pay dirt. Zach Allen caught five footballs for 52 yards. On the Carrollton side, quarterback Jordan Roberts completed 16 of his 32 pass attempts for 192 yards and two scores. Both of them went to Kyle Rivette, who finished with eight catches for 124 yards. Derrick Nash, who has been running crazy on the football field, was held in check. He finished with 24 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. Roman Mathews hauled in four passes for 27 yards.

Watervliet 56 Marcellus 21

The first quarter was pretty tight. At the end of the first, Watervliet held a 14-7 lead. Then, Watervliet started scoring left and right, pushing the halftime lead to 41-14. 50 seconds into the third quarter, they scored again and started the running clock. Quarterback Jake Cowsert completed 10 of his 12 passes for 165 yards and four touchdowns while also carrying the ball six times for another 45 yards. Running back Javauntae Thomas rushed seven times for 140 yards and two scores, which included 77 yard scamper in the third quarter. He also returned a kickoff 90 yards to score as the first quarter ended. Receiver Travis Bolin caught six balls for 113 yards and three touchdowns. Deven Schultz caught two for 46 yards and a score. For Marcellus, quarterback Jared Jones tossed seven passes and completed three of them for 76 yards, ran 10 times for 99 yards, and scored twice. Marcus Pompey ran 14 times for 47 yards and a touchdown and also caught two balls for 54 yards. Mason New ran 13 times for 71 yards.

St. Clair 39 Marysville 12

The Saints of St. Clair had a great night defensively. They forced six turnovers and returned one for a score (Joe Hartwig returned it 37 yards; it was also his second interception on the night.) Running back Bo Meldrum ran for 143 yards on 13 carries and found the end zone once. Blake Meldrum ran eight times for 85 yards. Jared Tobey toted the rock 19 times for 75 yards and three touchdowns. Easton Schweihofer nailed a 22 yard field goal. For Marysville, quarterback Josh Smith threw the ball 20 times for 155 yards. Brad Stevenson scored both times for Marysville, once from the 12 and again from the one yard line.

Beal City 43 Lake City 8

It wasn’t pretty. Defensively, Beal City didn’t allow a first down on Lake City’s first five possessions. They led at halftime 28-2. Quarterback Sam Schafer completed six of his eight passes for 135 yards and a score. He also ran seven times for 39 yards and two more scores. Hayden Huber was led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 66 yards and a score. Ty Rollin also scored, and finished with seven carries for 57 yards. Ryan Tilmann caught two passes for 91 yards and a score. For Lake City, quarterback Drew Marion completed six of his 21 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown while also tossing three picks. Tyler Root made 13 tackles while Austin Booms and Nathan Holt each notched eight.
