I can’t believe how quickly this season is going! Week Four of nine is in the books for the 2012 season. Memories are being made every day at practice and in the games.�� Some of my buddies and I still talk about different games and football exploits. Heck…I was just talking about my JV season less than a half hour ago! My playing days are long gone and this is about the young men (and women) who play football in our Great Lakes State. There aren’t many places like a football stadium on Friday or Saturday evening during a Michigan autumn. You get to see the beautiful sunset, watch as the field keeps it’s illumination from the stadium lights, and, hopefully, hear a crunch or two that makes everyone say “WHOA!” So head to the school and pay your admission, grab a bag of popcorn and a soda, but enjoy that time because it only comes in the fall.

Flint Powers Catholic 34 Saginaw Nouvel 12

The Panthers of Nouvel came out strong, but it was Powers who flexed their muscles. Nouvel drove the initial possession inside Power’s territory, but quarterback and defensive back Garrett Pougnet intercepted the ball on the eight yard line. Next, he found Ethan Wiskur for a 73 yard touchdown reception. He finished with 11 completions of 17 pass attempts for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Pougnet also ran twice for 18 yards. Nine different Powers players had at least one rushing attempt. Nick Sullivan ran nine times for 15 yards but Brooks Morgan gained 44 yards on his six attempts. Wiskur finished with three receptions for 113 yards and two scores. Prescott Myers also caught two balls for 25 yards and a score while also nailing a 27 yard field goal. For Nouvel, Drew King completed 13 of his 22 passes for 116 yards and a score while also running for 24 yards on seven rushes. Ryan Sullivan was the work horse for the Panthers, rushing for 108 yards and a score on 20 runs. He also caught five balls for 26 yards. Christopher Joynt also chipped in a touchdown on one of his three receptions for 38 yards.

St Mary Catholic Central 37 Carleton Airport 7

Not exactly a pretty game. The Falcons were pitching a shut-out until Carleton Airport running back Brent Richards busted a 58 yard touchdown run with less than 40 seconds remaining in the game. Yet again, SMCC utilized the trap to run the ball down the field. Jordan Regalado scored twice and gained 88 yards. Austin Corbin returned a fumble for a touchdown from 34 yards out. For the night, seven different running backs helped the Falcons gain 306 rushing yards on 47 runs. On the Jets side, Scott McCormick caught six footballs for 82 yards. Quarterback Brandon Potcova had a decent night and was able to find receivers. The big difference in the game was the play of the offensive lines. St Mary Catholic Central won that battle.

Zeeland East 27 Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central 23

In a battle between two unbeaten teams, sometimes it comes down to the little things. The offensive line for Zeeland East deserves credit for opening holes for the two running backs. Spencer Viening ran 26 times for 120 yards and two scores while also hauling in a six yard touchdown pass. Josh Blauwkamp helped run the ball and finished with 58 yards on 14 carries and found the end zone once. Quarterback Michael Custer completed nine of his 15 passes for 62 yards and a score. Quincy Bird caught four of those passes for 21 yards. Austin Bellis and Travis Jacobs each made 11 tackles in the defensive effort. For Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, it just wasn’t their day. Quarterback Justin Chopp completed 12 of his 21 passes for 169 yards. David Evans ran the ball 21 times for 128 yards. Zach Walker scored twice and also caught three passes for 86 yards.

Flint Carman-Ainsworth 55 Flint Northern 8

C-A took it to the Vikings from the get-go. Future Spartan Gerald Holmes ran for 122 yards and three scores on 10 attempts. Malik Seales ran six times for 88 yards and a score while also getting a blocked punt into the end zone from 10 yards out. Quarterback Connor Storms completed one of his three passes for a 55 yard scoring strike to Brandon Walker. He also kicked seven PATs. For Flint Northern, Lamont Fields hauled in a 12 yard touchdown pass from Noah Parker in the 4th quarter to kill the shut-out.
