Michigan High School Football Results - Week Two
Football is starting to roll! High schools have finished their second week of action. College just finished a long weekend of football. The NFL isn’t too far behind with the first game on Wednesday. Labor Day is gone and the only people that are allowed to wear white at this point are the away teams. Like we talked about, many teams made a big jump from week one to week two. Let’s examine the games we talked about last week to see how the teams faired.
Dearborn Fordson 35 Redford Thurston 14
Some may say that this is revenge for the L Redford Thurston pinned on them last year. Others say that last season doesn’t matter this season. Either way, Dearborn Fordson took it to them and came home with the win. On the first play of the game, quarterback Kamel Faraj found Hussien Kadry for a 47 yard touchdown strike. Faraj finished with 138 yards and two scores on six completions of nine attempts. His rushing didn’t go to well, as he was credited for three carries for a loss of 37 yards. Jamil Sabbaugh ran three times for 101 yards, including a 69 yard reverse on the third possession of the game. Michael Berry carried the ball 14 times for 54 yards. Kadry finished with two receptions for 81 yards and a score while teammate Ali Farran also caught two balls, gained 39 yards, and scored as well. Hady Bandar rushed 10 times for 43 yards and the other score. For Thurston, they were able to run the ball well at times, and played like a young team at other times. Quarterback Shakeer Williams completed four of his seven passes for 43 yards and ran the ball 15 times for 72 additional yards and a score. Kevin Williams helped out with 12 rushing attempts for 52 yards.
Leslie 61 Stockbridge 33
Wondering how this game got out of hand? The answer is easy if you take it logically. I’d like to help you in your struggle to be free. There must be 50 ways to recover and onside kick. 50 ways to recover an onside kick (shout-out to Paul Simon!) Unfortunately for Stockbridge coach Jeremy Killinger, they were not able to do that. Heck, with the fourth quarter almost half over, the Stockbridge offense had only ran nine offensive plays. Leslie QB Joey Kobus completed three of his six passes for 49 yards but ran 16 times for another 107 yards and two scores. John Baughan was the workhorse, toting the rock 23 times for 155 yards and two scores. That wasn’t it though; the third prong of the rushing attack was Greg Davis who ran for 155 yards and three scores on 13 carries. For Stockbridge, quarterback Kaleb Grammer completed eight of his 18 passes for 103 yards and three scores. He also ran the ball 14 times for 96 yards and a score. Josh Ensign ran 12 times for 60 yards and a score. Receivers Devin Allen and Lucas Showerman each caught three passes for 56 and 29 yards, respectively. Allen also scored twice on his three receptions. I wonder if Allen slipped out the back, Jack…
Freeland 19 Ovid-Elsie 14
I was worried about this game; I wasn’t sure that it would be very good after the beating O-E took against Portland. Boy, was I wrong! This game came down to a fourth and goal from the one yard line with less than two minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Ovid-Elsie, they were stuffed and Freeland got the W. Mitch Noack ran 15 times for 120 yards and a score for Freeland. Chris Graebner also ran 15 times for 89 yards and two scores, including the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. Not only did O-E lose, they also lost Larry Fouts to a lower back injury. He had almost 100 yards on five runs in the first half. Trevor Keo scored on a 33 yard run and finished with 21 carries for 98 yards. Jake Helms scored on a QB sneak and also completed four of his seven passes for 71 yards. Three of those went to Jacob Price for 67 yards.
Zeeland East 60 Zeeland West 52
Another week, another 50+ point game for Zeeland West but with the same results. This week, it took two overtime sessions to decide who is king of Zeeland. In the losing effort, Marcus Lambert ran wild, with 307 yards and five touchdowns on 17 rushing attempts. Quarterback Jordan Lambert completed three of his 10 passes for 97 yards and a score while also running five times for an additional 55 yards. Jordan VanDort led the team in receiving with two catches for 82 yards and a score. Passing is what allowed Zeeland East to beat Zeeland West. Quarterback Michael Custer completed 19 of his 33 attempts for 281 yards and added 37 yards on six carries. Spencer Viening toted the rock 24 times for 171 yards and two scores. Josh Blauwkamp ran 19 times for 179 yards and a touchdown. Levi Vanorman caught nine passes for 172 yards and two scores to pace the receiving corps. The hero of overtime was Zach Hill. He caught both touchdown passes in overtime. None of that would have been possible if East kicker Gabe Boss didn’t nail a 29 yard field goal with three ticks left on the clock in regulation…even after West tried to “ice†him.
