Prep Basketball Report January 19-26

It’s Thursday again and do you know what that means? Other than being a day late (and sometimes, a dollar short), it's time for the prep basketball column on Spartan Nation! The last week has been quite interesting for me, on a personal level. Some of you know that my home was robbed in November. Well, this past Friday, we closed on our new home! Saturday and Sunday were filled with moving…and cleaning…and organizing (which I’m not good at, ask my wife). But at the end of the day, we are in a beautiful home in a much safer neighborhood. Ok, enough about my personal life and happiness, let’s get into the Prep Basketball Report!

High Score of the Week

Caro 94 Essexville Garber 91 (2OT) (185points)

The Dukes of Garber and the Tigers of Caro decided that regulation wasn’t enough. Then in the first overtime, they were having so much fun that they decided to keep it going into a second overtime. Essexville trailed by five points with 5.5 seconds remaining in regulation. They made two free throws, stole the inbound pass, and drained a three point shot as the buzzer sounded. During the second overtime, Caro’s Brant Miller nailed a three point shot early and the Tigers made their free throws at the end to win. Miller was the lead scorer with 29 points. His team mate Jake Sattelberg chipped in 18 points. Alex Grills scored 17 in the losing effort and Tyler Schroeder had 15 points.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week/Century Club Part 3

Detroit Westside Christian 100 Detroit Universal Academy 17 (83 points)

WHOA! Every week I see these blowouts and sometimes it’s hard to believe my eyes. It was 48-12 at the half and Universal Academy only scored five more points in the game. Robert Davis scored 29 points, grabbed five rebounds, stole the ball four times, and tossed two assists. Demetrius Miles scored 15, pulled down 12 rebounds, blocked two shots, stole four balls, and tossed two assists. I’m not sure how Universal Academy did, but from the score, they didn’t do too well. They are 1-3 on the season with two huge blowouts. Westside Christian has been very good this year and blown out a few teams.

Low Score of the Week

Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern 30 Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern 18 (48points)

Not exactly what you would think a great game score would be, but both coaches said the crowd was loud and boisterous in the first ever regular season meeting between the two schools. Free throws were a huge part of the win for FHN, as they made 67% of the shots from the charity stripe. At the end of the third quarter, Northern led 17-14. There were 43 turnovers in the game. Thomas Hendricks led the scoring blitz for Northern with six points (four via free throw shots) and Dan Michaud scored five (three from the line). In the losing effort, Alex Harrison scored seven points.

Michigan State Recruits Update

Branden Dawson – SF, Lew Wallace High in Gary, Indiana

Not only is Dawson the #4 strong forward in the nation, he’s also nominated for the McDonald’s All American team. His Lew Wallace High School team was the #7 team ranked by the North West Indiana Times, despite they had a 5-7 record at the time. At the MLK Classic, Dawson scored 31 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, stole five balls, and tossed five assists. The 6’6” player with long arms and fantastic jumping ability should be happy to be going to Michigan State and getting a chance to compete with high level opponents every day in practice.
