Prep Football Week One Results

What an exciting week! Our first games are in the books and some teams realized that they must work much harder if they are going to have a good season. For others, it’s just the beginning of what they want to accomplish. We will have week two in the books a little early this week because of the holiday weekend. Then we can get right into Spartan football (or Chippewa football, Bronco football, Gator football, etc). So let’s get into it! Ready, BREAK!
Mid Michigan
Rockford 38 Davison 13
Rockford coach Ralph Munger compared Davison to the University of Michigan; Munger said that Davison needs some more time to get things going. It started out tough for the Cardinals. They had a punt blocked a little over two minutes into the game and it was returned for the game’s first score. Rockford also put together a 10 play, 41 yard drive for another score to go up 15-0. Davison was able to get on the score board by virtue of a tipped pass that turned into a 40 yard touchdown reception to open the second quarter. The Cardinals were led by fullbacks Josh Lazenby and Brandon cooper who combined for 28 rushes and 115 of their 148 rushing yards. Jake Thompson completed 7 of his 14 passes for 113 yards and a score. Rockford put up 177 yards on 36 attempts, led by Joe Johnson’s 58 yards on six carries.
Detroit
Clarkston 6 Rochester Adams 3
For a game I thought that was going to be a high-scoring affair, the point total was pretty low. Maybe it was the rain, but maybe this is a new year for the Wolves. Clarkston junior Brian Benway hit two (30 and 36 yards) field goals in the first half for the winning margin. Their quarterback, Tyler Scarlett, was 8 for 27 and 133 yards of their 183 total yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Clarkston forced five turnovers and held Adams to 212 total yards. The only score for Rochester Adams came from the foot of George Patsarikis’ 27 yard field goal on the first drive of the second half. Adams had chances to score, but mistakes and turnovers kept them from winning. That and a 5’8†145 pound Clarkston player named Andrew Schram. He had fumble recovery early in the game on their 19 yard line and made big hits and tackles throughout the game.
Capital Area
Grandville 10 Grand Ledge 0
It’s the same old story for Grand Ledge as it is for many teams in their first game of the season. Turnovers and failing to convert in key situations kept the Comets off the scoreboard. The first half was a defensive struggle with Grandville scoring the only points just before halftime; a 21 yard field goal by Seth Hanenburg. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs scored their touchdown by a 58 yard run by Travis Kamstra. Grand Ledge had two chances to score, once in the first quarter and once in the fourth. The first drive was stopped on fourth down and the second drive ended with Dario Bongiorni being picked off at the Grandville eight yard line. Bongiorni was six of 21 for 74 yards and three interceptions. Jared Kissane had one reception for 35 yards. Grandville had 190 yards on 49 carries and 99 passing yards while turning the ball over twice.
West
Montague 52 Muskegon Orchard View 21
The Wildcats of Montague limited their mistakes and capitalized upon the Cardinals miscues. Even Hal Holman, Orchard View head coach, said they were a good football team. Cody Kater was 13 of 16 for 168 yards and three touchdowns for Montague. When he carried the ball, he had nine carries for 66 yards and two more scores. Drew Pineda had 68 yards on 11 carries. The receiving crew for Montague had a nice night as well. Anthony Root had eight receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown while Matt DeJong caught four balls for 75 yards and a touchdown of his own. They totaled 379 yards in total offense. For Orchard View, quarterback Kody Harrell was four of eight for 44 yards. Adam Ross had two receptions for 35 yards and their running back Stedman had two touchdown runs. Coach Holman said it best, “We just ran into a buzz saw, they played very, very well.â€
North
Ishpeming 24 Iron Mountain 14
The Hematites of Ishpeming started out scoring on their first drive. Brett Nault pushed it in from five yards out for the first of his three touchdown night. He had 206 yards on 30 carries. Iron Mountain’s Mountaineers wouldn’t go quietly though. On their second play of the game, Bill Boddy scored a touchdown on a 44 yard quarterback keeper. Tony Secinaro had a 54 yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Ishpeming played tough defense. They held Iron Mountain to 98 yards rushing on 19 attempts and 38 passing yards.
