The first week of the playoffs is through. While some teams were tricked, others had a nice treat. Through the mud, the blood, and the cold rain, 128 teams played tough and made sure their season will continue. Others weren’t as lucky. With only three more games to win until they play at Ford Field, we are getting to the trophy part of the season. Teams win a district champion trophy, a regional champion trophy, state finalist trophy, and, if they can get the win, that elusive Michigan shaped State Champion trophy. Unfortunately, none of the games I picked this week were close at the end. Let’s take a look at the blowouts.

Capital Area – Division 3

DeWitt 42 Mason 0

This exemplifies the type of football played in late October; falling rain and a muddy field which leads to most teams running the ball more than passing. The Panthers dominated this game. They racked up 398 yards to Mason’s 28. Nathaniel Deak ran for 101 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Ross Parson gained 86 yards and scored a 74 yard touchdown. Connor Metevier caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Jimmy Williams. Williams ran in a 44 yard touchdown and another from one yard out. He finished the night nine of 15 for 96 yards and that touchdown toss to Metevier. The Panther defense was tough; senior James Jackson had three tackles for a loss on one possession alone. Paul Jorgensen also had a great game from his defensive lineman position. Lansing Sexton travels to DeWitt on Friday night for the District Final.

North – Division 4

Kingsford 28 Cheboygan 6

Once again, the Flivvers had the Chief’s number. Kingsford had some players under the weather and made mistakes, but Cheboygan couldn’t capitalize on them. Justin Heupel returned a second quarter kickoff 80 yards for a score which put the Flivvers up 14-6 and they didn’t look back. Winston Larson, the U.P Class ABC Defensive Player of the Year took shotgun snaps (Wildcat type of plays) and gained 62 yards and two scores in the fourth quarter (41 yards and a one yarder). He finished the day with 107 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns. Kingsford ended up gaining 225 yards of total offense to Cheboygan’s 205. Chief quarterback Derek Ferris completed 10 of his 17 passes for 146 yards and a 20 yard touchdown pass to Joe Scheele. Trevor Closs caught six footballs for 108 yards. Kingsford’s Larson, Heupel, Jimmy Rice, and Andy Carpenter made nine tackles each. Kingsford will host Big Rapids on Saturday.

Detroit – Division 1

Detroit Southeastern 41 Westland John Glenn 0

It was a pretty lopsided game thanks to the Jungaleer defense. They held John Glenn running back Jeremy Langford (1,899 rushing yards prior to the game) to 33 yards on 12 carries. That defense, led by William Gholston, didn’t allow Westland to get much going. Southeastern running back Paris Powell scored four touchdowns; he caught a 41 yard TD pass from Edward Thomas, caught an 18 yard score from Thomas, ran in a 16 yard score, and returned a punt 50 yards for the final score of the game. He finished the game with 16 carries for 96 yards and three receptions for 82 yards. Thomas completed six of his 20 passes for 117 yards. Southeastern will play Cass Tech for the fifth time in two years on Saturday. They have beaten Cass Tech four straight times.

Mid Michigan – Division 5

Millington 53 Carrollton 21

The Cardinals of Millington took flight early, and never looked back. Justin Stutler scored four times, twice in the first quarter, and Jessie Stewart ran in a score from 62 yards out. That put the Cavaliers in a 21-0 hole before the first quarter was over. Carrollton battled back in the second, with Adam Moses catching a 23 yard TD strike from Zack Palmreuter and Robert Essex running in a 13 yard score. Palmreuter finished the night with five completions on 12 attempts for 147 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. One of those scores was a 68 yard completion to Andy Miller in the third quarter. That was the last points that the Cavaliers would score. Cameron Wilson ran in a 25 yard score and Stutler added another. Stutler finished with 148 yards and four touchdowns. Essex had 88 yards on 24 carries for Carrollton. Millington will host Vassar on Friday night.

West – Division 8

Muskegon Catholic Central 35 Battle Creek St. Phillip Catholic 0

Like Millington, Muskegon Catholic Central took a 21 point first quarter lead and kept their foot on the gas. They had a huge advantage in total offense, with a 349 to 81 margin. Damon Armstrong carried eight times for 92 yards and three scores replacing the suspended Major Metcalf. One of those touchdown runs was from 61 yards out. Will Perri toted the rock nine times for 74 yards and a touchdown. Todd Mergener ran seven times for 49 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Todd Pallas only threw three passes, but he completed two of them for 49 yards. Muskegon Catholic Central will travel to Climax-Scotts on Friday night.
