Now that Week 11 has come and gone, we have moved very close to the finals. All that remains is the Regional Final and the Semifinal before Ford Field. There have been some surprise teams and many teams who haven’t lost a game…or only lost one. This is when the leaders step up to ensure that the team is emotionally ready for a huge game. If you have a request of which game to cover, please go to the Phalanx Forums and post a message. I will do my best to cover games people want to see. Let’s review the games profiled last week.

West – Division 2

Lowell 26 Muskegon 19

Gabe Dean, the sophomore quarterback for Lowell, had a huge game. He completed four of his five passes for 61 yards. It was his legs that helped the most. Dean ran 32 times for 165 yards and three of the team’s four touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was a 47 yard run late in the first quarter. Dean converted four fourth downs in the game. The biggest play he made was a 22 yard completion to Derek Cornish on fourth and 19 with the score 20-19 in the Red Arrow’s favor. Running back Austin Graham ran 22 times for 73 yards and the one yard score a few plays after Dean’s huge fourth down conversion. Muskegon quarterback Kevonta Keys had a nice night as well in the losing effort. He completed five of his nine passes for 145 yards and all three touchdowns. Lowell will host Portage Central on Friday.

North – Division 7

Traverse City St. Francis 54 Rudyard 8

It wasn’t the type of game that Rudyard wanted. Running back Ben Swan had come down with the flu and was scratched from the lineup before warm-ups, but Joey Kerridge and John Zakrzewski carried the load. Kerridge scored the first touchdown on the first possession, going 51 yards to pay-dirt, and had 95 yards and two scores on his four carries. Zakrzewski carried six times for 65 yards and two touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was a 50 yard punt return to put the Gladiators up 34-0 on the first play of the second quarter. Riley Bullough was three of four passing for 45 yards. Davin Salo was 17 of 43 passing for 222 yards and a touchdown for Rudyard. The Gladiators will travel to the Yooper Dome (Northern Michigan University) to play Ishpeming on Friday night.

Capital Area – Division 5

Ovid-Elsie 46 Durand 8

It was a pretty windy night in Elsie last Friday. That didn’t mean anything to the Marauders though. Chris Robinson ran away with the game. He had 200 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns. He also intercepted a football. One of those Robinson touchdowns came when O-E was backed up at their own 11 yard line in the second quarter. Robinson zig zaged his way for an 89 yard touchdown run and put his team up 14-0. O-E had six sacks on the night, mostly because of good coverage down field. For the Railroaders of Durand, James Burrow completed five of his 17 passes for 65 yards and three interceptions. He did have some nice runs though, picking up 83 yards on 18 carries. Ovid-Elsie will host Millington on Friday night.

Detroit – Division 1

Detroit Catholic Central 38 Livonia Stevenson 0

Coach Tom Mach got his 300th victory on Saturday night in an impressive fashion. The Shamrocks posted their seventh shutout in 11 games this season and took care of Livonia Stevenson. Niko Palazeti ran for 166 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. His backfield mate Anthony Capatina racked up 153 yards and a score on 18 totes. The defense held Livonia’s Austin White to 75 yards on 10 carries. They had to make sure that White didn’t get to use his speed and cutback ability to fake out the defenders. Detroit Catholic Central will host the Canton Chiefs on Saturday. Canton put up 60 points last week against Ann Arbor Pioneer.

Mid Michigan – Division 6

St. Charles 35 Reese 14

The Bulldogs of St. Charles tried to dominate this game. Every time they did something really good, they’d mess up and Reese would pounce on the opportunity. Eventually, the Bulldogs were able to exploit the injuries and flu bugs that bit the Rockets. Dugan Roosa, Mike Spannagel, and Travis Larsen all scored while Tyler Nieman scored twice. Larsen gained 113 yards on 13 carries. The Rockets used a wide receiver as quarterback after both couldn’t make it work because of sickness and injury. Kyle Yaklin completed three of his six passes for 42 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 62 yards. 45 of those came on a touchdown run in the third quarter. His lone touchdown pass went 23 yards to Trevor Gruber just before halftime. St. Charles Coach Brady Lake was impressed by his offensive line play. He also gave credit to Reese, saying that they had a lot of heart and never gave up. St. Charles will get a rematch with Ithaca on Friday night at Central Michigan University.
