We have passed the ¾ point of the regular season and have only six weeks until the top 16 teams in the state will battle it out for the Michigan shaped trophy at Ford Field. There has been plenty of hoopla about this player or that team, but we all know that football is the greatest team sport in the world. You may have 10 players doing exactly what they are supposed to do, but if one player misses an assignment, then the play won’t work right. With the weather changing, the coaches also have to change their game plans a bit. Last week it was pretty rainy across the state, so forced people to run more. But hey, like Bob Wayne sang, “I work outside in the pouring rain, when it’s cold as ice, when I’m full of pain. It don’t matter what I feel inside as long the job I’m working gets done on time.”

West

Rockford 16 Muskegon 13

The Big Reds of Muskegon dominated this game…for 3.5 quarters at least. The last half of the fourth quarter belonged to Rockford. With 5:42 left on the clock, Ryan Darby blocked a punt which gave Rockford the ball on Muskegon’s 24 yard line. Quarterback Tyler Masiewicz completed a 19 yard touchdown pass to Neil VanderLaan to pull within four. The Ram defense forced a three-and-out on Muskegon’s ensuing possession and then was able to convert a fourth and one with 24 seconds remaining. Masiewicz again tossed a touchdown pass, this time from nine yards out to Zach Haugen. With only 14 seconds left on the clock, things were not looking good for Muskegon. The Big Reds got a great return from Greg Wickliffe and had three seconds left and were on Rockford’s 41 yard line. Unfortunately for Muskegon, Kevonta Keyes was sacked. Taylor Masiewicz completed seven of his 11 passes for 67 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Ryan Darby ran 16 times for 95 yards. For Muskegon, Keyes completed three of his eight passes for 28 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Erran Briggs ran 22 times for 185 yards.

Mid Michigan

Linden 35 Lapeer West 28

The clock was winding down. Linden was trailing Lapeer West by one point. Quarterback Cody Marks had to make a decision on fourth and eight. Instead of passing to the sticks and getting the first down, he dialed up a 39 yard touchdown pass to Jessie Patterson. After that, he ran in the two point conversion to give Linden the seven point win. On the night, Marks was 13 of 26 for 231 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 21 times for 122 yards and three more scores. As if he didn’t do enough, he also had a 61 yard kickoff return early in the second quarter. For Lapeer West, quarterback Nate Smith was 11 of 22 for 81 yards and a touchdown. He also ran 12 times for 45 yards and two more scores. Linden now sits at 7-0 and has sole possession of first in the Metro League with two games remaining.

Detroit

Ann Arbor Pioneer 23 Ann Arbor Huron 18

Ann Arbor Pioneer saw the game slipping away. The defense had given up 11 points and the lead in the third quarter. Finally, it came down to the final two minutes of the game with Pioneer trailing Huron by one point. With 71 yards to go, Miles Sorise knew he had a lot of work ahead of him. It didn’t take too long though; four straight runs by Drake Johnson and a 39 yard reception by Ricardo Miller moved the ball to the Huron five yard line. Drake Johnson punched it in from one yard out with 29 seconds left in the game to take the lead. Sorise only completed three of his 10 passes for 58 yards, including the 39 yard completion to Miller. Miller finished the night with two receptions for 49 yards.  Drake Johnson rushed 17 times for 147 yards and two scores. On the Huron side, John Helvie completed nine of his 24 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also ran the ball 11 times for 18 yards. His last interception sealed the deal for Pioneer. John Haarer caught three passes for 99 yards while Jeremy Jackson caught five balls for 55 yards and a score. Bradford King rushed 24 times for 84 yards.

Capital

Stockbridge 26 Parma Western 14

It took 30 years, but Stockbridge won its first Southern Michigan Activities Association crown. The last championship they won was in the Ingham County League. Junior quarterback Jeff O’Brien had a great night; he rushed for 193 yards on 27 carries and scored twice, completed two of his eight passes for 31 yards and a touchdown, and also picked off a pass near the Parma Western goal line in the fourth quarter. Nick Hoard ran 13 times for 111 yards and a score while also catching one football for 3 yards. Dominic Busen caught one pass, but it was a 28 yard score late in the second quarter. Stockbridge out-gained Parma Western 409-81 in rushing yards and 440-250 overall. For Parma Western, Nate Sobania completed eight of his 25 passes for 169 yards, two scores, and four interceptions while also running eight times for 32 yards. Kurt Mick caught five of those eight passes for 139 yards and two scores. Austin Maynard and Andrew Coolbaugh each ran 14 times, gaining 42 and 35 yards, respectively.

North

Ishpeming 50 Negaunee 0

Wow. No one expected a blowout victory like this. Ishpeming junior quarterback Daniel Olson scored three touchdowns. Senior fullback Brad Nault scored twice more. The defense came up with two fumble recoveries for touchdowns. Olson ran only 12 times, but racked up 175 yards and those three touchdowns. You have to give credit to the offensive line for Ishpeming; Tyler Oslund, Damian Sarvello, Mitch Korpi (who scored on a 38 yard fumble recovery), Lonnie Hess, Marcus Maddock, Andy Flanigan, and Cody Prisk played exceptionally well. The other fumble recovery for a score was made by Brett Nault on a 26 yard return. Even Coach Jeff Olson was surprised. According to the Mining Journal, he had this to say, “The whole 48 minutes we did well. It blows my mind how well we executed.”
