Week Two Results - The Tough Get Going
What a fantastic weekend for football! The high schools kicked off early, colleges played all of the long weekend, and the professionals start this Thursday. Plus, it was a fantastic weekend, weather wise, here in our Great Lakes State. If you are like me, you spent most of the weekend watching football. I had a game Wednesday, varsity game Thursday, Saturday I only strayed from the TV when my wife dragged me out to run some errands, and Monday I caught the awesome Miami win over Florida State. Football is in full swing here in America and most of us couldn’t be happier.
Detroit
Detroit Catholic Central 35 Hudsonville 0
The Shamrocks started out by scoring on their first four possessions, and never let up. They had a 28-0 lead at the half and scored on their first possession of the second half, which sent the game into the running clock mode. DCC had 356 total yards to Hudsonville’s 80. Shamrock quarterback Sam Landry completed nine of his 14 passes for 137 yards and two scored. Running back Niko Palazeti had 136 yards on 16 carries and scored three times. Things look good for the Detroit Catholic Central Shamrocks if they play like this all season long.
Capital Area
DeWitt 49 Portland 14
DeWitt is going to be a team to contend with this season. They showed it against Portland. The Panthers had 513 yards of total offense. Led by senior Connor Metevier’s 134 yards and three touchdowns on 7 carries, DeWitt dominated on the ground. Quarterback Jimmy Williams completed 13 of his 17 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Four of those catches were by Jordan Johnson who caught the ball for 107 yards and a score. Portland coach John Novara said that it was one of the best football teams he’s ever seen. His quarterback, Jacob Kenyon was seven of 13 for 96 yards and two touchdowns. The Raiders weren’t able to get much of a ground game going; only collecting 86 yards on the ground.
West
Stevensville-Lakeshore 33 Battle Creek Central 7
It’s tough for a high school football team to run the ball poorly and still expect to win the game. Battle Creek Central Bearcats found that out the hard way. They rushed for 48 yards on 37 carries. Meanwhile, Stevensville-Lakeshore had 345 rushing yards and three touchdowns (447 total yards). The Lancers were led by Nick Adam’s 120 yards on seven carries. Quarterback Eric Lemon had 57 yards passing, one passing touchdown, and two rushing touchdowns. What is disturbing though is tall the penalties that Stevensville-Lakeshore had. They were flagged 13 times and had 118 penalty yards. The only big play for the Bearcats was an 84 yard fumble return for a score by Samaj McCethan.
North
Muskegon Catholic Central 35 Frankfort 0
Wait a second…didn’t I just write this score? MCC had a nice day rushing the ball, accumulating 207 yards on the ground. Major Metcalf had 99 of those yards on 12 carries, including a 43 yard run. He also caught a 68 yard touchdown pass from Tom Pallas (2-5 for 86 yards). The Crusaders led 21-0 at the half. For Frankfort, quarterback Dan Nugent went five of 14 for 32 yards and also ran 19 times for 36 yards. MCC outgained Frankfort 285-124 in total yards.
Mid Michigan
Traverse City St. Francis 33 Saginaw Nouvel 12
It’s a situation that the Gladiators have been in many times and where the Panthers are usually at. Saginaw Nouvel has never started a season 0-2. It was close in the first half, with TCSF having a 7-6 lead at halftime. Riley Bullough tossed a 13 yard touchdown pass to Max Bullough in the second half. Riley also ran for 51 yards on 10 carries and three passes were completed for 47 yards. Max finished the night with four receptions for 35 yards and two runs for eight. Nouvel running back Ryan Miller had 17 carries for 58 yards, but eight of those carries were for zero or negative yards. TCSF running back Ben Swan carried 12 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
