Michigan State Football's Recruiting Battle

Michigan State football has had wins and losses with the class of 2021. For the class of 2022, the Spartans are hitting the ground running.

Mel Tucker and Michigan State have had a challenging recruiting period for the class of 2021.

Having a late start already put the Spartans behind, on top of two commits de-committing; 3-star tight end, Jake Renda, who committed to Pittsburgh, and 3-star safety, Gabe Nealy, who committed to USF.

While Michigan State lost two commits, they had two athletes completely shutdown their recruitment; 4-star cornerback Charles Brantley, and 3-star defensive end Tyson Watson.

“I haven’t talked to Coach Burton since Dantonio was still there. Coach Burton is a big reason why I committed there, because he stayed there through Mel Tucker, and I had a good connection with him,” Watson said.

Watson received an offer from Michigan State on April 6, and committed shortly after on the 17.

On August 31, he tweeted out, “Forever a Spartan,” showing his dedication and commitment to the school.

Michigan State has faced an uphill battle throughout the recruiting process, but with the recent commits of Geno VanDeMark, Charles Brantley, and Tyson Watson, Michigan State is starting to see its hashtag #21builtstrong come alive.

For the class of 2022, being Mel Tucker’s first full recruitment period for Michigan State, Tucker and his coaching staff have been focused on, “recruit every day.”

When September 1st came around for college coaches to have full communication with the upcoming seniors (class of 2022), Michigan State did not stall. They instead, hit the ground running.

Michigan State’s social media team has also brought attention to the school, by building, in my opinion, cool graphics for top prospects.

A smart move on their end to catch not only the athlete’s attention but also, the athlete’s audience as well.
