Michigan State '22 Target: Deone Walker's Speed for His Size

For being a 6-6, 304-pounder defensive tackle, Deone Walker has got speed for his size.
“I feel like everybody wants a big guy with a lot of speed.”
During a time like this, it can be challenging to find your rhythm. But Walker has found a way to get into the groove.
“I run almost a mile every day before school and I drink a gallon every day so I can get faster.”
Walker stays determined off the field, to keep up with the pace on the field.
“I really put in just powering over the guards, me running, you don’t really see a 300-pounder moving that fast. For my size, I’d say I’m fast.”
Having his size as a defensive tackle makes him great at holding his own, and having his speed makes him that much more explosive towards the opposing line.
“My size, especially the length of my arms really makes it way harder to block me. If I extend, if you let me do that, I feel like you’re already through.”
While Walker is confident with his natural abilities and skill, he knows there are areas for improvement, especially when putting together highlight tapes for coaches.
“It’s the most important now, because coaches can’t come and see you at your games or come to your school and watch you work out or anything. But, it’s like, ‘oh, I have my phone, let me see what you’re doing.’”
For Walker, these highlights aren’t just about showing skill, but becoming better.
“I feel like it’s been more of a struggle, but performance wise, not thinking about my recruiting and just improving way more.”
