Michigan State 2022 Target Gavin Wimsatt: Building Chemistry

Class of 2022, Gavin Wimsatt, received an offer from Michigan State on Wednesday. What he's looking for in a school? Team chemistry.

“Yes,” Gavin Wimsatt, Michigan State 2022 target said after receiving an offer from the school on Wednesday.

“It was exciting. I didn’t think they were going to offer to me. I was shocked, we were having a normal conversation and he (Jay Johnson, offensive coordinator) said, ‘would you be interested in Michigan State University?’” Wimsatt said.

Wimsatt became the athlete he is today by being a tri-sport athlete since the age of five.

“I’ve always played sports; playing football, baseball, and basketball. It’s always been part of my life. My older brothers played; my parents played. Baseball used to be my favorite sport, I loved it. With baseball, I’ve always been able to throw, and I thought playing football as a quarterback would be the best position for me.”

As a quarterback, Wimsatt takes on a leadership position on the offensive side by, showing by example and building trust within the team.

He said, “You can definitely tell if trust isn’t there on the field. You have to gain it and build that chemistry. You can trust them more, because you know what they can do, and they know what you can do. I’m the quarterback. If I’m consistent, then the team is going to follow what I do.”

The chemistry at Wimsatt’s high school football team, Owensboro High School is, “amazing.” One where the team created their own game off the field.

“Recently, our seniors (class of ‘21) and my junior class (class of ‘22), even the ‘23 class, we all had a big water war. We go to each other’s houses and shoot them with water guns.”

It all started back when someone in the ’22 class brought a water gun after one of the team’s hot practices.

“Everybody went to the store and bought water guns. The next thing you know, we’re all spraying each other. They (the coaches) laugh. They like it,” Wimsatt said. “We have our water guns in our cars, because if we see somebody, we can just shoot them with the water gun. That’s the funny thing. We would be out in public looking around to see if we saw anybody. We can all laugh and joke, but we all know when it’s time to get to work and know what to do.”

For Wimsatt, his spirited nature strives for talking about things people like to do; the simple things.

“Most people that know me, know that I like kids. I love babysitting. I’m like a little kid inside, so I like doing things they like to do and seeing what they like to do for fun. We might build with Legos or watch kid movies. Do what kids do,” Wimsatt said.

In reminiscing on his childhood, Wimsatt brought up one special person who has been there for him growing up, his granddad.

“We were best friends. We did everything together. We’d actually go on road trips together. We actually planned to go to Idaho to see the world’s biggest potato. He wanted to travel around in an RV. He liked to take road trips.”

One of Wimsatt’s favorite things to do with his granddad was, “we would always watch Forrest Gump together. He passed in 2014. It was one of our favorite moves to watch; It was one of my favorite things.”

In building a great chemistry with his current team, and with his family, Wimsatt is looking for a college he can call home.

“A home away from home. Somewhere that’s going to benefit my future and help me academically. I probably won’t make a decision until the end of this year.”
