Just A Bulldog Minute: Is It Too Early To Consider Lemonis Career

After a tough midweek loss, here's the question surrounding head coach Chris Lemonis's position.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs started this weekend’s series with a successful 5-1 win against Georgia Southern, however, there was another game this past week that had fans wondering if this will be a good season.

After a loss during the victorious series against Air Force and a sad 13-10 setback to Austin Peay, Mississippi State baseball is off to a rocky start. With seeing losses to non-conference teams this early in the season, is it already time to start thinking about replacing head coach Chris Lemonis?

Last year the excuse pulled was that the team was full of a lot of freshmen who had talent but were still learning. However, this season, with having a full year on the team, it’s about time that the team started to play well together.

In 2023, the Bulldogs went 27-26 overall and 9-21 in conference play.

In 2022, Mississippi State finished a lowly 26-30, 90-21 in the SEC.

That's since the 50–18 (20–10 SEC) national championship team in 2021.

Granted, we're not even 10 games into the 2024 schedule, but there are already plenty of signs that Mississippi State could struggle and miss the SEC Tournament for a third straight season.

Last year, fans continually questioned the coaching staff when the Bulldogs saw loss after loss, however, the letting go of pitching coach Scott Foxhall did appease the critics, at least temporarily.

That may not be enough this time especially if Mississippi State can't show significant improvement by March 15, when it opens league play against LSU. Remember, baseball has the tradition of three strikes and you're out.
